Also they wouldn't get their Mafia-style 30% off-the-top cut of every application that they don't deserve;[...]The only way to bring Apple down to earth is to have a court FORCE them to compete instead of allowing them to be anti-competitive at every turn.

Apple is not only getting greedier by the day, but they've surpassed Microsoft, IMO for being outright controlling and arrogant scum.
30% is exactly what an antique dealer would charge if you placed your mahogany dining table in their shop. He doesn't have to accept it but you can go elsewhere.

Now, one size does not fit all. Not with mobile phones. But Apple knows that, you know that, we all know it. But you know what you can do if you don't like the situation, don't you?

If you don't like it, buy something else. Really. It's your choice as a consumer. Yes, really. So instead of whining that this or that company doesn't jump when you say so, take your business elsewhere. I'm sure Apple doesn't mind.

Why is people like (should I call you a fanboy? I don't know) seem to think that if a consumer like myself doesn't like ONE FACET of a product (in this case the "App Store" for a product like the iPhone or iPod Touch, that I should forgo the entire product and go ELSEWHERE????

I'm SICK of people like you and your "Go back to Windows" BS and "Go buy some other phone" BS. It's just that. BS. Arrogant BS at that. Because I don't like Apple's control and marketing BS, I should buy an entirely different platform, which I might hate for other more functional reasons, but if not, I should just shut up and take it and never complain because if I do, I'll get the "go somewhere else" BS from people like you. Sorry, but I don't need it. It's bad enough I have to put up with Apple screwing us over in x different ways, but I don't need to HEAR ABOUT IT from some fanboy who seems to think Apple rules the Universe and shouldn't have to hear any complaining.

We don't NEED another phone. We simply need another app installer by a 3rd party to cut Apple out of the picture. Yes, for their own phone because they are becoming the epitome of GREED and ARROGANCE. If they want to charge 30% to be hosted on their store, that's FINE. But don't tell other stores they aren't allowed to exist because that's a monopoly.

MSFT does not manufacture PCs. Take a look at consoles however. Those are also closed systems and yet you don't see people complaining. Do you expect PS3 software to play on an Xbox360 or visa versa?

No, I agree with you and I understand. What I was asking is how it was that Microsoft got into the monopoly trouble, wasn't it by forcing IE into windows and blocking other browsers out???

I love Safari on the iPhone and the Mac, I am just curious.

So John Gruber says:
Based on "anonymous sources". They are always handy, aren't they?

As extensions. Not lumped into the program to make it as cumbersome
So having something as basic as "undo" built in is more cumbersome than having to hunt down some extension which has to be bolted on and doesn't integrate as nicely as native features?

as Opera was when I stopped using it.
Opera was less cumbersome before. So you started using it when it was more cumbersome, but stopped using it when it became less cumbersome?

Believe it or not, Magnus, I do sympathize with your position.

Surely Apple should be happy with a second browser. Surely Jobs is shrewd enough to see the value in that. Opera Mini does not support Flash or any other plugin so why not?

But because you've read all the previous posts before responding I don't need to remind you that no final decision has been reached by Apple on this matter.

You made the point that Apple could never get away with this for the Mac. Well, for obvious reasons, Apple is not interested in being so strict for its computer line. The iPhone is and always will be, thankfully, a different story.

And yes, you may call me a fanboy if you wish. That is up to you. You can even call me an apologist if you really want. As to whether those titles are accurate or not is another story.

A final decision HAS been reached by Apple. Opera just told us: Apple won't allow Opera Mini on the iPhone.

Choice is good on a PC, but not on a phone?

It sounds so black and white the way you put it. Would you like IE as well? How about Windows XP? But that's just software! How about a 10x optical zoom on the camera? Bigger screen? Smaller form factor? Flip version? One that takes DS cartridges? Just 'cos we want it doesn't mean Apple has to build it.
