I love Opera, and I used to use Opera Mobile exclusively when I had a Nokia; if they ever release Opera Mobile (even if it's paid), I'll jump ship immediately.

You Apple supporters are fanatics. Everything Apple makes is great, everybody else "sucks" or are just copycats. Indeed, indeed.

I'm glad I'm using Android.

I think probably 990,000 of those people will use Opera once, see how ugly it looks compared to Safari, and never use it again.

yeah totally agree. prime example of how all these complainers out there are clueless. they complain until they get what they wanted then they just simply move on to the next complaint. MSFT is known to cater to these type of people.

MSFT is known to cater to these type of people.

Did you mean this to sound like a compliment?

Cater: To supply what is required or desired.

As in, "Microsoft is known to supply what is desired by their customers."

for edge users like i am now till the 4th gen iphone comes out its great snappy quick and i will probally browse alot more than before just using safari most of the pages i browse load up in under 10 seconds 15 max

I'm glad you're using android too, you can finally take advantage of the technology the first iPhone was using 3 years ago, it's pretty cool right?

p.s. opera browser does suck, I deleted it almost as quickly as I downloaded it, laggy and inconsistent, poor UI, terrible user experience

p.p.s reading macrumors if you're a "hater" is hypocritical, looks like your smartphone choice isn't the only bad decision you've made lately :D

Probably people who can not get a 3G connection. Its noticably faster on Edge but I cant tell the difference on 3G.

I didn't try it on 3G or Edge, but Safari is much faster for me on Wifi. The UI is ugly, it's not any faster and the zooming is horrible.. [delete]

Try using the POS and you'll see we're right. Opera Mini sucks ass on the iPhone. Hell, i WANTED it to be better than Safari. But it's not even close. BTW, if you're against Apple and all for Android, why are you even here? Go play on your ugly ass Droid.

Too bad the app sucks...

I totally agree. I may not bother to install it, but I don't plan on using it again after the first time. I think that first reviewer I read was just so excited that Apple actually let "duplicate functionality" through, that they didn't really objectively review the app.

Man, I'm really glad to see I'm not alone here. I really get confused when I see positive reviews and then I try it and it really, really sucks. Sorry Opera, just telling it like it is. Go back to the drawing board.

This Opera is horrible.

I see why Apple approved this app. This is a smart way to kill off the competition. Let the users use opera, see how horrible it is, and they will switch back to safari.

It's an interesting concept, but yes the execution was poor.

And I agree I'm a little concerned regarding the security of data sent.

One interesting point I discovered with it is it acts like (well is actually) a proxy server so sites that are regional specific and won't load in New Zealand load with the App.

Apart form that, well cr*p.

I never had that issue when I have run Opera mini on other platforms. They always load the US based site and I have gone to sights regional specific and load US version just fine.

Having choices is good, I'd love to see what a Chrome mini would turn out like :) speaking of Google products, I'm hoping Google Voice App will come back soon (maybe with iPhone OS 4) so we can have more VOIP options too.

Chrome (or at least some browser using the WebKit engine - Mozilla 5.0??) does exist for iPhone within the Google app. It's rather featureless and doesn't even have an address bar. Whether or not it's actually considered "Chrome" is debatable, but it's definitely not just Safari, as proved by these screenshots:

For those interested, this is the 'user agent string' provided by thismachine.info for each browser:

  • Safari:
    Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16

  • Chrome:
    Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/7E18

  • Opera:
    Opera/9.80 (iPhone; Opera Mini/5.0.0176/764; U; en) Presto/2.4.15

For what it's worth, Safari and "Chrome" are almost identical, with the only differences being 'Version/4.0' and 'Safari/528.16'. Both use AppleWebKit/528.18.

Also, Opera only lists 'Unknown Platform' under 'What operating system am I using', while both Safari and "Chrome" list 'Mac OS X'.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I'm one of those who downloaded, I wonder how many uninstalled it just as I did. This app sucks, I don't get it

I would have to agree with many others. Probably the worst App I have ever installed. I was shocked for a few minutes in disbelief.

No wonder Apple approved it. They knew how bad it was. :)

it needs alot of work. Which it will get, hopefully apple allows them to stay when it starts getting good.

Opera Mini: How it feels to browse on a motorola razr!

Aside from speed the app is utter garbage. I (as in one person) would have done a better job!

Maybe expectations were high for this app & ye for the most part i agree with whats been said here on this thread especially the page rendering...But it is no where near to being the worst app ive installed coz lets face there are some bloody awful apps out there. Opera needs work...yes! However the speed was a big improvment. So IMO if they sort out some issues via update coupled with the overall speed it delivers....Deep Breath....This could be a great app :-0 there i said it. Bring on the update opera

Sure, the app sucks, but it (hopefully) sends the message to Apple that people are hungry for CHOICE!

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple only decided to approve it because it's not as good as Safari...

Yeah probably.

I am shaking my head at so much hate over a great app.

On another forum page here, a user said, "i don't like it cuz you can't tap the address bar and scroll back to the top."

I replied to him, tap the red bar, it does the same thing.

so many so quick dismissed this app without checking it out further.

its really sad. being as this is supposed to be a technology forum.

I don't think its all that bad. It is pretty fast. The UI could use some tweeks. the rendering could be better.

If you go into settings in the app and switch it to full screen it is a lot more usable.

If they could fix the zoom I could see myself using this in bad coverage areas.
