I have an AW3 Nike edition that I use every day. I like to track my workouts and use it for basic notifications from my watch. I have the opportunity to get the 44mm series 5 for $279 tax free. Is it worth it or should I continue to sport my 3? One feature I would like is the always on screen, not sure that’s worth the money...

I didn't think the AoD would be a big deal for me. I thought it was something I could take or leave but I absolutely love it. I went from an S3 to an S6 and it was absolutely worth it. You'll get a pretty big performance increase too.

I was in almost the same situation last year. Sprint had a del for 1/2 off a Series 5.

I ended up doing the upgrade & am happy I did. I don’t see any value in the AOD & in fact I turned it off, but the Series 5 has a bigger screen, a faster processor and gets better cellular reception due to a change in the casing. Plus the speaker is louder. Overall I am happy I did the upgrade, though I would not have done it at full price.

My first AW was the 4. Even the increased screen size of the 4 vs the 3 would seem worth it to me. I just bought a 6 and debating if that upgrade was worth it from the 4...

I’ve upgraded from Series 3 to Series 6 and I can say, AOD is fantastic feature for watch. And of course screen size, even if in raw numbers it can’t impress, when you look side by side on Series 3 and Series >= 4 it makes huge difference in usability.

I would go for it if you are able to financially due to the fact there is a pattern developing with storage and OS update issues on S3.

I went from a S3 to S5 back in August. Mostly because I wanted the new watch faces (info graph) and AOD. But I don't use AOD often or at least not during weekdays. At the end of the day battery is at 25-35% with AOD on and 50-65% with AOD off. My day starts at 0400 and ends about 21-2200. That is with my setup though with minimal 3rd party apps. Seems everyone has different experiences as well.

Overall, I am very pleased with the S3 to S5 upgrade. I wasn't sold on the S6, just another S5 but with spO2.

The S5 is still a great watch. That price that the OP has listed is almost verging on ‘Black Friday‘ pricing, and you probably wouldn’t find it any lower than that, especially if this is tax free.
