What does she do? She runs a TV show, she practically 0wns Dr Phil, and she......bakes cookies? Sorry, I'm just trying to figure out how she made $1.1 bn when she doesn't even seem as entrepreneurial as Martha Stewart, for example.

And who writes to Oprah to tell them how much their mom/friend/brother/etc needs a new car? Its like begging or something.

"Hi Oprah, I'm a big fan of yours. I love your show and watch it every day. Anyway, my brother's car is trash! ..... "

She probably asked viewers to write to the show. I believe she had a wedding show where she had people write about their dream wedding and why they wanted it or whatever. Then she and the producers picked the best letters for people to actually get their dream weddings. I would assume something similar happened with the cars and I'd imagine that it's easier for most people to "beg" on a loved one's behalf than for their own gain. :)

Someone asked what Oprah does to earn over a billion dollars. She is a TV show host but also owns her own production company. She's been in movies and has a magazine. I can't think of anything specifically that she endorses (for compensation) but she is just as much a name as Marta Stewart, albeit without the sheets and towels. Also, once you reach the point of being rich, it's easy to become richer through the powers of compound interest. ;)

Man, I've been having trouble getting a job in Chicago let alone getting a free car. Maybe she's giving jobs away soon. :p

Dr Phil is her man-puppet. She has a bunch of stuff that you don't necessarily see running around. At the beginning and end of a number of shows there are splash screens saying so and so productions. That company get the big money from the show. Harpo productions is one of the large ones on daytime tv. If you spell it backwords you see where opraH gets most of her money. Then there is her magazine O (not to be confused with the "Story of O") He show pulled in serious change and she continued to leverage it.

I thought that title belongs to Alice Walton of Wal-Mart fame?
You are right. I remembered something about Oprah being on of the richest and Googled it. I saw a Forbes result that said she was, but it was dated. I just did a more detailed look and you are right, it's Alice.

There are a number of women above her not sure how many made their own money

There's also J.K. Rowling. She must be quite rich as well. I know for fact that she has more money than the Queen.

Apparently there was a family from madison wisconsin that was given one of those cars and wasn't in need of a car at all and was actually a high income family, and they hadn't be surveyed about needing a car or any thing.

To the comment about GM making cars that use too much gas, yes they do, if you look at the specs for almost any of their cars, then look at a similar sized car from japan, the japaneese car will most likley have a smaller engine that makes more power, uses less gas, and will last even longer, the only cars that don't fit that theory from GM are the Saturn Vue redline which uses a honda V-6 engine because it is so much better than GM's v-6's, and then the Pontiac Vibe which is actually a re-badged Toyota Matrix which is built in canada and has a yamaha designed motor, and then rednecks will still try and claim that the Vibe is an "American Car".

Car?

Oprah Winfrey at her talk show.
"Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car! Everybody gets a car!" Winfrey yelled as she jumped up and down on the stage.

I'd prefer the car.

She may be rich, but I didn't think she was THAT rich. She should have chosen a better car. I don't mean more faster or more expensive, but maybe something that was more reliable, used less petrol, or ..... something.

Me too..but only to sell it. I've seen how pontiacs hold up in comparison to my lovely toyotas :).

That poor stage! :p

It'd sure be nice to 'win' something as pricey as a car---especially with all taxes paid!! I'm not discouraged though, I find that every day I'm a winner --- it says so on those flashing banner ads!

I don't understand how the tax thing works. They get the car, GM pays $5K (or whatever) to cover the income/state/fed taxes, which would also be considered income, so taxes would need to be paid on the $5K, and so on....

As of now that could also mean a Pontiac G6 at least it's a 2005 model. I just hope that it doesn't interfere with Steve introducing a G6. Of course no problems with the company name, both are different.

Yeah, as long as Apple Computers agrees to never enter the auto industry. :p

That is one thing that we can be certain about Apple. They will never enter the automobile business to manufacture a car. Would like to see a Mac OS running a car though. :D

The whole thing would be translucent blue plastic. The gear shift would only have forward, reverse and park. The steering wheel would be 3" in diameter and there would be only 1 peddle. (If you wanted to brake you would change the channel on the radio while accelerating.
