I'm putting the 1tb in the HD Bay and a 640GB in the Optibay. The 640GB has the OS with Bootcamp on it.

Will the MBP automatically start up from the 640GB in the Opitbay?
Will Windows from Bootcamp automatically start up from the 640GB in the Optibay?

I plan to just use the 1tb for storage and since it's 12.5mm it won't fit in the Optibay. I don't want to have to re-install the OS's on the 1tb if I don't have to.

Yes.
Yes.

The 12.5mm will fit in the optibay.

Are you sure about that? I'm waiting for delivery of the 1TB drive, so I tested out another 12.5mm drive that I have and it sticks out of the Optibay caddy a good bit.

I didn't test it out completely by actually installing it because I only want to disassemble the thing once.

I'm using a 1TB + 750GB (Both 12.5mm drives) in my 17" Core Duo MacBook Pro, with RAID-0 too. Works great.

Hey your posts have been most helpful thus far. However why are you using a 750 and 1TB? that means you can only use up to 1.5TB. The last 250GB won't be used.

ALso would you mind running xbench with attention to the hard drives and posting all of the hard drive results here.

I am very keen to see what speeds you can get as the RAID 0 should make your HDDs 25% faster.
Thanks

I would strongly advise everyone against putting a HDD into the optibay, My 500GB Scorp Blue is nearly dead now, the only things I can think of is that I dropped the computer once, was watching a movie on an airplane during bad turbulence, and maby threw the laptop on my bed , like a 6 inch drop, multiple times.. I guess that's enough to kill the drive.

Just stick the Spinner in the HDD area, and the SSD into the Optibay.

I also plan on getting the 1TB drive and a 160GB Intel SSD.

or just dont abuse your equipment......

i have run a 500gb blue in my optibay for almost a year before switching to a 256gb ssd...it still works great too.

I used a fenvi optibay clone (retails for about 15US$ in China, MCE optibay is a complete rip-off) with a PATA connector on the back and a SATA connector for the HDD in my 15" late 2006 Merom Macbook Pro. I have been reading everywhere that 12.5mm drives would not fit into the MBP with an optibay caddy. I tried nevertheless because I really wanted 1TB in my notebook. Even though the HDD will exceed the optibay caddy, the topcase closes without any effort.

So here I am writing from my non-unibody 15" MBP, with an Intel X25-M 80 GB SSD in the regular HDD bay as the system drive and a 1TB WD10TPVT in the optibay as a data drive.

later non-unibody MBPs might need a different caddy (with SATA connector on back)

Bottom line: 12.5mm HDD fit into non-unibody 15" MBPs (Merom definitely, Penryn probably) in the optical bay with an adapter caddy

Can you please provide a photo. This topic is too much "I think" and "I did it"(with no proof).
The reason I ask is:
You link to an item that is $24 and not $15.
The item says 9.5mm, not 12.5mm.
You posted 1 post in overclockers with the same info.

This forum hadn't been updated since Sept 09 and you added it this month.

I may be a wrong but I may be right. Please remove any suss aspect and give us a photo so we know that it can be used for sure in your model.
EDIT: I was wrong- but happy to be so in this case.

Ok Sebastian,

the price i was quoting ($15) was indeed the price in China, were I bought it from (see here).

The item itself IS 9.5mm high - the same height as the original optical drive it replaces. The WD10TPVT is 12.5mm high and will protrude from the optical caddy by about 3mm. This is not a problem in the case of the non-unibody 15" MBP, as there is still some room between the optical drive and the top case.

I attached a couple of pics of this setup by your request.

I have a 13 inch MBP unibody. I can verify today that a 12.5mm hdd will not fit in the MCE Optibay.

I'm not sure why it won't fit? The 15" Pre-Unibody systems had a 9.5mm Optical Drive, yet, they can use a 12.5mm Optibay without any issues.

I used 1TB with 750GB is because that 250GB won't be used. I was using the last 250GB for Boot Camp. 1.5TB for OSX, 250GB for Boot Camp.

I wasn't able to get any benchmarks before removing the RAID and going back to a single drive. However, I can tell you right now it is faster even with dual 5200RPM drives.

I'm currently using the bay in the iMac for 1.5TB + 1TB = 2TB for OSX, 500GB for Windows.

I'll get benchmarks of that when I get a chance.

No kidding, it wasn't even close to fitting. The keyboard cover rises higher than the HD bay, so it was pretty obvious that it wasn't going to fit. I tried it anyway for the heck of it and it was not happening.

12.5mm hdd in a MCE Optibay caddy in a 2009 unibody MBP = fail

Keyboard cover? Wait what?

The Unibodies, you just have a bottom cover and that gives you access to every internal area.

Great, thanks for that. I of course void any suss ideas originally held.

I have a new 15" i5 Macbook pro, can any one tell me which adapter I will need. I'm not sure of the external interface I need on the adapter. I think its SATA but I'm not sure. Can anyone confirm this is the right one?

No it won't work.

you would need a bay likethis one.

or any other model with these key specs:
height of HDD of 9.5mm, not higher
the 3 screwholes
SATA connector on both ends
not face plate

So you want the OBHD9-SATA-SATA-NF if you prefer the newmodeus brand

I currently have an Intel X25-M G2 and want to add a 1TB drive like the op, but I don't want to lose SMS. Has anyone had any luck with hibernation when using the SSD in the optibay?

I dont understand why SMS would be an issue here? I have SMS enabled with dual hard drives and I dont have any issues with hibernation or sleep or whatever. I constantly run my battery to 0% so I'd know if I have hibernation problems. I'm not running any OSX hacks either

^My understanding is that SMS and hibernation only work in the original HD location.

To get everything to work problem free, I'd need to leave my SSD in the original HD location, and get a HD with SMS to go in the optibay. It seems that I'm limited to the 500GB Seagate since it's the largest SMS capable drive that I know of that can fit in the optibay.

If I'm wrong please correct me and make any recommendations. I've got my newmodeus caddy on order for my 2010 13" MBP and I want to safely maximize my hard drive that will supplement my SSD.

Sweet, thank you so much for the confirmation and photos!!

I have the exact same clone and a pre-unibody 2009 15" mbp with a recently bought 500gb (if I had known this earlier I would have bought a 1tb instead). I'll definitely buy a 1tb drive now and put it in the optibay, and use the 500gb for something else.

I can confirm that a pre-unibody 15" mbp will indeed work with a 12.5mm height hard drive. I just installed a WD 1TB 12.5mm height drive in my mackbook pro with a newmodeus drive cage. The specific part number for my device was OBHD9-SATA-NF since my 2007 Santa Rosa 15" MBP does has a PATA port instead of a SATA port for the optical bay. However, all is functioning properly and the macbook looks to be unmodified.
