I've also stripped the two screws as labeled above on my late MBP 2011 17 inch.

I'm not much of a handyman so I've elected to leave it as is until my extended apple warranty expires before cutting the bracket off.

Should my MBP need servicing and the technicians inquire about the stripped screws, my cover story is that I simply followed the wrong youtube video where the hard drive is located on the upper left corner (for MBP 2011 17 inch it's lower right) and upon realizing it was the DVD drive, immediately ceased operations and replaced all the screws I could before moving to the correct drive bay.

Oh and I formatted my drive to replace Lion with SL so I apparently "lost" the PDF manual that included instructions on HDD replacement. :)

Thought I'd chime in here,

Same happened to me. Rolled the dice, booked Genius Bar and got the best ever genius!

Told him the exact story, and how it may have even come from factory like that as I applied no force at all.

He took it out the back, and came back 5 mins later with a new screw in there :)

$0.

Now that I have a real screw in there, I will try again now.

I don't know why people keep suggesting he try and get this screw out... mine was put in by Chinese He-Man and adamentium blue threadlock

The goal is to remove the optical drive, not the screw and that can be accomplished quite easily by just turning the bracket...

I am bit confused here.
Is it same for macbook pro late 2011 model?

Hi Everybody,
I just wanted to thank you all for your effective advices.
I had the same problem with that same screw , and i was depressed since i ordered the bay and the HDD and an SSD (My original MBP HDD died) and i taught it was all lost and would have to return them ,then i followed your instructions and now i'm all set ..**** Yeah!
I just went through all registration process to tell you :Thank you all.

New Solution

I was helping a friend recently and in his case both of the screws were stripped to the point of no return. I found that if you snapped the part of the bracket where no antennae were then swung the bracket round the screws could be removed. Just be careful swinging the bracket round because the airport and bluetooth run through the plastic part as well.

I hope this helps people.

Would this work?

I've never had to do this, so pardon my ignorance if this doesn't work, but would it be possible to take care of this troublesome screw by using a rubber band (as shown in the attached picture)?

Thanks to this thread.. i could overcome the stripped screw issue with fry-man22' tips.. and this was a million dollar point from him - "The goal is to remove the optical drive, not the screw" :) that helped to change my mindset too..
