I might be picking up an iMac G4 from a friend soon, (I don't know the specs) however, it has a dead combo drive. What would be a good brand and drive to replace it?

They can use nearly any PATA/EDIE desktop sized optical drive. The only limitation is the length of the drive from bezel to back where the cables plug in. That can't be too long or it won't fit in the iMac's dome. Most modern-ish drives are short enough to fit without a problem.

Depending on the drive brand, many are able to have their bezel removed through a series of clips. LG drives usually lacked this though...

I have some DVD-RW drives from old PM G5s laying around you can have.
