Sorry, I am not used to the mac optical drives, as I am a PC convert.

On disc insertion (DVD & CD), is it normal for the iMac drives to make a crude buzzing noise (sounds like a buzzer)? Same noise happens when drive stops reading a disk when it goes idle.

Also, I get a noise every 10 seconds or so on DVD playback.

I figure it's normal, but want to double check.

My iMac's Combo Drive can get quite loud. It's not as bad as my iBook G4's drive though. 🙂

Probably normal - but just check that it isn't scratching the disks. I once had a powerbook with a slot-loading drive which started scratching, so I'm pretty paranoid about that. Otherwise, most likely OK.

Yeah, it doesn't seem to be scratching any discs.

It just came out of the box barely a week ago, so it has a year to fail which it probably will do if the drive is bad.

Thanks for all the help.

Yeah my ibook sucks in the DVD/CD like the cookie monster but I got use to it and it hasn't messed up a disk yet.
