Because it basically means I woke up with a phone only charged at 80%. As usual, Apple’s AI is spot off.

Apple should change the way it works, we should be able to set a time that we want the phone to be fully charged.

I’ve heard from a lot of friends and family that it’s a very hit and miss feature at the moment.

Hopefully apple has a better way of implementing this feature to work properly in the future.

I agree. Apple’s “AI” is useless. Here I am at a situation that my phone isn’t charged because I woke up 30 minutes earlier.

I don’t want my phone to know anything at all. I just want it charged without having to think about it. Like what it did before I upgraded my phone.

Now it feels like I have to justify to my phone that I shouldn’t wake up early. That’s the world upside down.

You know you can turn this off right? It’s just a feature to use for those who want to. You’re not required to it have it on

Yes I switched it off now. But I also never switched it on in the first place.

The feature was added with one of the iOS updates. Maybe iOS 12 but I can’t remember. I got a notification that popped up saying it was added. I guess giving you the option to turn it off if you wanted to.

It is a BS yes but, on IOS 14, I've created a simple automation to send myself a iMessage whenever battery is below 30% or is charged to 80%. This has helped me to keep my phone's battery between this range pretty much all the time from last 3 weeks now.

It really just comes down to this and not much more.
I'm guessing some people might not know this. I had it off at first but now turned it on. My phone seems to charge the last little bit slower but other than that I haven't noticed a difference. What I did notice is network makes a huge difference in battery life. I've gone from Verizon to T-Mobile and that was significant. I'm guessing weaker signals or dead spots.

I have it on but oddly it never seemed to work cuz no matter when I plug it in, it always charges to 100% 🤷🏽‍♂️ Or I charge it so randomly that it doesn’t get any pattern

It's never worked for me even with a set bedtime alarm. I got the message one time about it shortly after I got the SE2020, but it never actually worked.

My battery health still says 100% after 10 months or so. I guess the feature works!

So the phone is supposed to read your mind and know that you were going to wake up 30 minutes early? AI isn't that smart yet 😂
Not your mind, just gyroscope activity over a span of time so it can better learn when you pick your phone up in the morning.

Optimized charging only worked twice for me since it was first introduced many moons ago. The first time around four to five months after it was first introduced with iOS 13, where my iPhone actually charged to 80%, held that charge until around 4am, then continued charging to 100% and was fully charged when I got up at 5:45 am. I even received a notification boasting how optimized charging has collected enough training data. I don't really know what happened next but my only explanation is that immediately after displaying this notification iOS dumped all data collected over toe course of the last four to five months and simply stopped collecting any more immediately, because it stopped working the very next night and kept charging straight to 100% every night ever since. Except for one night, around two weeks ago or so, when all of a sudden it worked a second time. This time without displaying any notifications at all. The only reason why I found out is that my battery seemed to have drained unusually fast and I was down to less than 20% in the afternoon, so I went to inspect what was causing the drain. Instead, I found out that my phone only charged to 80% on a Saturday night and happily sat there holding that charge until I got up around 7:30 am on Sunday morning.

Oddly enough it has been working great for my wife ever since it was first introduced. We have identical chargers (wireless chargers integrated into our nightstands) and iPhones released simultaneously (iPhone X and iPhone 8). We both get up at around the same time, usually between 5:45-6am on weekdays and between 7-8am on weekends. Yet it failed me and works great for her. Spot on, Apple. Spot on!

Keep in mind that this is all still on iOS 13. I haven't tried iOS 14 yet but I don't expect it to get any better.

There are certainly those with devices that have 100% battery health after similar time periods if not more even without that feature. Hard to say much one way or another really. However, it seems that the feature isn't something that really kicks in for a lot of people even when enabled, while it seems to be running for various others.

It likely does that. If you wake up at 7am every day it figures that is your wake up time. If you wake up 30 minutes early one day it has no way to expect that

Yes, but what if “Apple knows better” and quietly removes this toggle from the settings menu in a future iOS upgrade? Suddenly some users are greeted with 80% charge the moment they wake up with no way to charge it to 100% before getting up.

I hope apple not removing this toggle, even though I leave it on despite the feature never works on me.

Except iOS pretty much informs you of the status on the lock screen.

Well...
Just look back a few replies and there’s one guy saying his optimise charging worked for him twice, and the second time he got no notification. Maybe that’s a bug but it happens.
