Okay, so I have a 2TB iCloud storage plan, mostly because the current tiers are inconveniently sized.

I loathe that iCloud doesn't have a "Selective Sync" option like is found on Dropbox. It's annoying when you're offline and discover that a critical file you need has conveniently been offloaded. But at the same time, Dropbox's Selective Sync is problematic -- for example, items marked to "Selective Sync" are invisible in the Finder.

In an effort to save some money and more importantly, some sanity, I am thinking about consolidating everything on iCloud Drive. To do so, I'd really need to rely on the Optimize Storage as I typically work on laptops with 128 to 256GB of storage.

So does anybody have experience with an iCloud account with stored data that exceeds your local capacity? How well does the Optimize Storage option work (especially in High Sierra)?
