I have an iPhone 14 PM running 16.4.1 with Optimized Battery Charging (OBC) enabled and Clean Energy charging disabled. I wake up every day at the same time, and my phone would always be charged to 100% when left on the charger overnight. Even if I woke up 10 or 15 minutes before my alarm, the phone would still be fully charged.

Over the last few weeks, I've started to notice that often times my phone will still be charging during my normal wake-up time. Or if I wake up a bit earlier, the phone is still at 80% and not charging at all. I know that OBC is supposed to pick up from daily charging habits and hold the 100% charge until the phone is needed. But it seems like with a recent update, the OBC is way more aggressive and seems to wait with the charge until the very last moment, which is very annoying.

I've disabled and re-enabled the feature to re-train it, but it's still behaving the same. It seems like my only option currently is to disable it and potentially increase battery aging or live with a phone that often times is only charged to 80%. Has anyone else noticed something similar recently?

Are you draining your battery below 20% at the end of each day?

My wife has been having the same issue on an iPhone 13 Pro w/ 16.3.1. She said it's happened a few times recently. I've turned off optimized and clean energy charging so we'll see if it repeats. This absolutely seems like a bug since the phone knows it was plugged in overnight but never decided to charge.

What happens when you turn on Clean Energy charging? It may be a bug in the way those two settings interact.

So OBC in iOS 16.4.1 seems to be partially tied to your Sleep/Wake Up schedule Alarm clock, at least that’s what I’ve noticed on my 13 Pro Max.

Today is a public holiday here in South Africa so changed the schedule for today to wake me up at 10:30, of course in typical fashion on a day off I wake up earlier then I want, look at my phone and it says Optimised Charging phone will reach 100% by 11:00am, I’ve now seen this multiple times during the weekend and during the week and it’s always close to when my alarm clock is due to go off. On a normal week day I set the schedule for 6am and sure enough it’s at 100% at 6am.

On a weekend and public holiday I set the schedule for 10:30am and sure enough between 10am-10:30am it hits 100% (it aims for the next hour but will hit 100% before the alarm).

I noticed this too happening with my 12, turned it off after waking up and realising it's not full. It should just charge based on your alarm or something.

I think you are onto something here. I changed my sleep schedule an hour back and now it's fully charged when I wake up. It's still stupid because now my sleep schedule ends before I get up and my phone will start buzzing with notifications.
