So, back in June and during the WatchOS 10 betas, it was pointed out even by Apple that "Optimized Charge Limit" (not the same thing as the existing Optimized Charging) was being extended in WatchOS 10 to additional models besides ultra. SE, 6,7,8,9. But i have an SE2 (bought just couple month ago) and WatchOS 10 updated two days ago, and my settings->Battery->health only shows the old toggle for optimized battery charging. NOT the one i've seen screenshots of for the newer "charge limit" feature.

Does anyone actually have this?

I also don't have this on my AW 6, but of course do have it on the Ultra. The Apple support document about this has not been updated since June: About Optimized Battery Charging on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

I do wonder if the option disappears once the watch's battery health gets below a specific level. My 6 is at 84%.

My Series 6 has it and the Optimized Charge Limit is currently active.

Battery health is at 89%.

Could you provide screenshots from Battery settings especially area around Optimized Charging? Maybe it’s active after some charges… 😅

My Series 8 does not show the toggle, but when I first put it on my Apple charger that evening after updating to WatchOS 10 it did flash a message stating that the watch would use Optimized Battery Charging and indeed it has default charged the battery to 81% (Battery Health is 93%) and if I want more, I need to take it off the charger and then put it back on and it will charge to full.

Have all those who have this issue tried the steps discussed in the support document to make this feature work?

Turning on these location settings in the Settings app on your Apple Watch can help Optimized Battery Charging identify situations where it shouldn't be used:

  • Privacy > Location Services > Location Services
  • Privacy > Location Services > System Services > System Customization
  • Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations > Significant Locations

OP here. It showed up spontaneously last night on my watch when i set it on the charger. So it appears that you don't see it until it first activates. However, there is NOT a toggle specific to the LIMIT function. There's just the pre-existing toggle for "Optimized Battery Charging". The way you know you aren't just using the old mode is on the graph screen as seen in the screenshot post above, where it says "Last charged to optimized limit". That's new.

Are you sure that wasn't just regular Optimized Charging? I believe the screen is the same in that case.

I'm sure it's not the same. The "charge LIMIT" terminology is new and only happens when the watch shows that funny circle-with-a-line thing indicating it will not only optimize-charge, but it will also (now) STOP at a certain %. Mine only started that last night.

And no, there's no setting separate for charge limit unlike in that old Apple doc. I think they either munged it into the same setting toggle as the old charging option, or this is a bug.

Read the support page "...On Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Series 7, and Series 8, turning off Optimized Battery Charging also turns off Optimized Charge Limit..."
There is no toggle for those models.

It does not say that turning on battery charging turns on optimized charge limit, though it does say it is on by default when setting up a watch.

In fact, it discusses the separate control that many of are not seeing:

”Your Apple Watch takes time to learn your charging patterns before it uses Optimized Battery Charging or Optimized Charge Limit. If your Apple Watch is new, the charging screen will say Charging to full.

If you want to turn off Optimized Charge Limit:

  1. Open the Settings app on your watch.
  2. Scroll down, then tap Battery.
  3. Tap Battery Health.
  4. Turn off Optimized Charge Limit.
  5. Choose Turn Off Until Tomorrow or Turn Off.”
edit: so I take it that it just may take some time for it to learn your pattern before it appears (?).

But that separate control appears to only be available on Series 9 and Ultra watches since only those are mentioned in the "To turn off Optimized Charge Limit on Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra and later" section. For the other models, it just mentions turning off Optimized Battery Charging also disables Optimized Charge Limit.

So a literal reading of that document implies that the Series 9 and Ultra 1 and 2 have that toggles and the other watch series do not and this tracks with what has been reported so far by those of us with Ultra and older Series watches.

I don’t see where it says what you say it says. Are we looking at different docs?

edit: for me, nowhere does it say “To turn off Optimized Charge Limit on Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra and later”

What I do read is:

”…supported Apple Watch models offer Optimized Charge Limit. This feature is available on Apple Watch Ultra with watchOS 9 or later, and on Apple Watch SE, Series 6, Series 7, and Series 8 with watchOS 10.”

@CWallace never mind. I see it now. I had searched for ultra and it showed two, neither being what you quoted.

I reopened a new tab and did a find and now it shows 3, including where it says what you said it says. That’s…absolutely bizarre.

Thanks!

The same happened on my series 7 the first day after OS 10 then stopped for over a month and has kicked back in after that . Stopped a couple days and is back on again .

I haven't noticed that , I'll have to look tomorrow morning . I didn't know abut it before reading your post !

Mine on my Series 8 started to work to limit the charge to 80% when WatchOS 10 released but then after a few updates it just stopped and never had done the charge limit to 80% anymore :(
