Ever since I got the 13 PM, I've noticed that optimized charging isn't working at all.. I have the "significant locations" turned on and all.. the settings are fine in general. I mostly charge my phone through the day.. to around 90-95% and plug it in at 20%. I have left the phone charging through the night maybe 3 times, but it charged past 80% every time.. it didn't stop there (I checked before actually going to sleep).

I'm using the original 20W charger.. am I supposed to use the old one? 5W?

It might take a week or longer to learn your schedule. Three days isn’t long enough for it to figure out your schedule.
While I don’t use it, others have said that it eventually starts working after enough time has passed. Give it another week.

A better way to charge is to get a HomeKit compatible smart plug and setup a charging Automation in the Shortcuts App. You can then fine tune it to do whatever you want.

Optimized charging will still charge the phone to 100%. Only thing it's supposed to do is pause charging when it reaches 80% then resume charging to 100% before you would normally unplug it.

With that said, I think charging both day and night is messing up its expected patterns. Smart Plug sounds like it might be a better option. I use a Meross one to keep my iPad between 60-80%.

I use the smart plug and automations instead of optimized battery charging because it was always hit or miss. It would work properly for a month or two then all of a sudden it wouldn't work for weeks..

What’s the automation?

This worked for me:

1. Open Settings.
2. Scroll for Battery.
3. Tap on Battery Health
4. Disable Optimized Battery Charging.
5. Charge your iPhone during the night.
6. Enable the feature back in the morning and the feature should work in the upcoming full-charge cycle.

As someone pointed out earlier, optimizes charging always goes past 80%, it just pauses at that point and finishes later.

It would be a simple matter for Apple to arrange that their devices powered by lithium batteries stopped charging at 80% or 85%, whatever the magic number is said to be. If, that is, it were really considered important. But they don't. Could this tell us something?

Yeah. Apple is cheap (cost cutting measure).

It would be simpler if the optimized charging algorithm looked at what time the alarm is set and just finished charging 1 hour before wake up time. That’s 2 lines of code, but no instead Apple probably used a 200 layer, 100 feature deep learning model that looks at your weight, height, lunar azimuth, what you ate for dinner, gyroscopic measurements of how you held the phone, etc to come up with an optimized charging completion time (that’s 90% wrong).

Apple wants to sell new iPhones every year, not make your battery last for 5 years.

I use smart plugs for this. Easier to make on the fly adjustments depending on current charge level and what type of device I need to charge.

I do too, with shortcut to automate the custom optimization/cycling, but it’s rare for folks to go this route. Thought I’d just toss out another stone simple idea.

If someone's on MacRumors then I think smart plugs should be simple enough to setup. They're frequently on sale for $5-10, too. ?

I don't bother with iOS shortcuts/automation at home. That's kinda difficult to implement when one uses a single multiport charger for multiple devices.

I agree something is not working well, iPhone 11Pro - since 15.4 even when I wake up on the same time phone charges to 100% 5-6 hours before I wake up (I am not night walker ?).
I don’t believe using google music for lofi in background or rain/sea sounds built-in in Apple causes it.

Will test today and tomorrow if suggestion of turning it off and on next day will help in any case :/

Where, because the least expensive plug I found was $35 on Amazon

I've gotten a couple of the Amazon-branded ones for $5 during promotions.

This Meross is what I use for iOS Shortcuts since it's one of the few I found that supports HomeKit. It's currently $15 for 2 outlets so $7.50 per outlet. I actually got the 2-pack (so 4 outlets total) of this last year for $22 with coupon. I use it for the 12.9" iPad which I leave constantly plugged in on my desk during workdays.

Here are a couple of TP-Link ones but no HomeKit support.

I got a couple of the energy monitoring versions (KP115) for $5 from Woot last year as well. I believe they just released a version of this with HomeKit support (KP125) at Target and Best Buy for like $15 but I haven't tried that one. I also have a TP-Link 6-outlet smart power strip.

Shortcuts are hit and miss with the non-HomeKit TP-Link plugs but their app has timers so that's what I just use. iPhones and iPad mini, I normally just charge for 30 minutes - 1 hour with 10-12W charger depending on initial charge.
