Hello all,
I finally have decided on buying an ibook. I was just wondering where the best place to buy is? The Apple online store seems like the most popular choice, but the tax issue has me also considering other options (on a side note, does anyone know how much they paid in taxes?). What is a good apple associate type dealer? Macmall.com? Macconnection.com? My last question is, do you get the Student Union rebate if you buy your laptop and ipod from a reputable dealer? The terms of the rebate say that you have to buy them at the same time, but it doesn't seem to specify if you have to buy from apple directly. Also, do you get the $100 rebate on printers if you buy the printer from Apple and send them the UPC code of the laptop if you didn't buy it from apple.com? Thanks in advance!

I just bought a iBook with BTO option on an 80GB HD and a 20GB hard drive and the total was $1308.00 and with the tax it went up to 1399.56, so tax was 91.56. Im pretty sure this means that the tax for me was 7 percent (florida resident)

^this was all with the educational discount

Im not sure how they apply different tax rates, its probably to the billing or shipping state.

When you think of all the discounts that apple offers, 50 dollars off of iBook, 30 dollars off of iPod, 180 dollars towards the iPod, and 100 dollars towards a printer, thats a total savings of 360 Dollars, which to me is pretty good.

I just double-checked my copy of the "Perfect Companion" rebate form, and it seems to be that if you didn't also buy the laptop from Apple, then the answer is no: "Apple products and qualifying printer products must be purchased from the Apple Store online or from an Apple Store retail location in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia. . . . you must provide . . . an itemized, dated sales receipt showing ALL Apple and qualifying printer products purchased . . .". I don't have the Student Union coupon form, since the computer we bought didn't qualify for that promotion, so I don't have any information about that one.

In case you also wanted to call, the phone number at the bottom of the promotion coupon form is 888 877 9742, for more information about the rebate. I called it myself, since our name and address wasn't printed on our receipt from the Apple Store like the terms require. The line isn't answered after-hours, but when I called back during the day, the woman was pretty helpful.

Good luck with your purchase, and I hope you enjoy your iBook!
