Do you have messages flagged in OS X Mail.app or in iCloud Mail? Usually that's what they look like in iOS Mail.app.

The orange dots were never there on "read mail". I dont have any flags set.

Those are flagged messages. Go into the messages and at the lower left, unflag them with the flag icon.

    Thanks, I see that. :)

I use multiple Gmail accounts via the native Email app. You're using iCloud email? My unread emails have the blue dot next to them & flagged emails show an actual red flag. Does iCloud email use the orange dot? IDK because I've never used iCloud email and IDK how it behaves visually.

And why the flags are orange dots instead of red flags.

Quite right! Thanks for that. I hadn't thought to investigate changing that feature since flags are OK with me. :)
