Does this hold true if the iMac comes with Mavericks? I know many of the 2013s are sold with SL, but since it is a refurb, it might come with Mavericks already installed.

I think what he is talking about,is to make sure your software is updated(software update under Apple icon in upper left corner). If you are running Mavericks already ,just check for any new updates,backup on time machine then you are ready to go.

No, if it already has Mavs installed, just do the migration when prompted during the initial setup.
