After hemming and hawing and purchasing a 2009 2.26 8-core machine yesterday, I decided that it is too hard to pass up the 3.33 GHz 6-Core Westemere. I placed the order today after reading a tremendous amount of the posts here on MacRumors. I have to say this place is awesome! There is no doubt about the quality of users here who really have many different viewpoints to draw upon to make an educated decision. Thank you to everyone!

Here is what I use:

  • Adobe CS5
  • Aperture
  • XCode
  • Computational Math Work & Data Analysis
  • MathWorks
  • AutoCad

Here is what I ordered:

  • Intel Westmere 3.33 GHz 6-Core
  • 3 GB RAM
  • 1 TB HD
  • 2 x ATI 5770
  • Mighty Mouse, TrackPad, & Wireless Keyboard

Here is what I plan to add:

  • Intel SSD 160 GB - Boot & Application Drive
  • 2 x 1 TB Western Digital RE3 Drive - Data
  • 2 x LightScribe CD / DVD Burner - anyone have any experience with these, are they worth it? (from OWC)
  • 12 GB RAM - 3 x 4 GB (from OWC)

Once again, I believe the base system that I ordered is really the best performance to cost ratio. You get 6 cores and 3.33 GHz clock speed.

Thanks again to everyone who helped. Now I need to save for another 30" Cinema Display

sorry to be clueless, but I can't find the 6-core, 3.33GHz machine on Apple's Mac Pro site.
Would you mind posting a link?
thanks, malch

Nice! I'm pretty sure I'm going for the six-core, too, but with the 5870.

I've got a lightscribe external, but I never use the lightscribe feature. I think the LS discs are cheaper now than they used to be, though.

I love my Trackpad!!
