There seems to have been a post Christmas surge in available M1 models at Apple stores.

I have the base MPB and decided to get a M1 for my son. I went to order on the Apple site Christmas night around 11pm and when I configured a 16/1TB model (GREY ONLY), it was available for pick up at my local Apple store. In fact it was available at several stores. For $9 I was able to get next day deliver or if I wanted free delivery the estimated delivery date was after Jan 28. The MBA was also available but I prefer the pro due to the brighter screen.

It was delivered 2 hours later than promised so the $9 delivery fee was refunded.

Very surprised at its availability after reading of the wait times on these forums.

I noticed that as well here. It seems the 16 GB/ 1TB/ Space Gray model is being stocked in stores! So sad they don't have silver.

MBP 16gb/1tb is available for local pickup or same day delivery in many Apple stores... no MBA on same config though

Most people who want 16 GB of RAM will probably want the active cooling of the MBP. Keep in mind that this M1 MBP is the base two port model. The top end four port 13" MacBook Pro hasn't been replaced with M1 yet and it's still on Intel. I'm so hoping that's where we'll see the 14" model come out.

Yep, I know it is the two ports.... I actually only need one port so non existent problem to me

It's not just two ports that is the difference. I don't know if you remember but when they were both Intel the two port model was a big step down from the four port model in many ways. It was often called the MacBook Air Pro because it was meant for someone who wanted just a bit more than a MacBook Air but didn't really need or want to spend the money for a MacBook Pro. I mean maybe the two port model is the one right for what you need to do and your budget. I was just pointing out that I would expect a much higher end four port model to come out soon.

The air and the mbp pop up all the time at local stores with 16gb / 1tb but the mini hasn't appeared at all.

No varieties of MBP or MBA with 16GB in any Apple Stores in SoCAL, mostly because they're all closed due to COVID!
Stores are closed to the general public but are fufilling same-day courier (Postmates) delivery orders. I ordered my M1 MBA on Dec 24th and it was delivered same day via Postmates. I'm in SoCal as well.

You lucky, Lucky :)
Maybe it was a cancelled order by someone who picked up a lesser specced one in store to get one quicker.
A few have done that.

Lucky. Near downtown Los Angeles area, the MacBook Pros show Jan 8 delivery at the earliest right now while the MacBook Airs are Jan 13 at the earliest. 16GB RAM delays that even further to Jan 28-Feb 4.

Just sold my 16” Silver 2TB 32GB for a M1 MacBook Pro :) I miss it though but not the constant fan running when i clamshell mode.

Was playing around with the store and noticed the only builds that you can find in store other than the base models are 16GB/1TB. Those used to be BTO only with a month out delivery window, but I'm showing 3 MBP's and 2 MBA's at my local store with that config ready for pickup tomorrow. Clearly Apple figured out restricting instore models to 8GB of RAM was stupid and are making up for lost time and picking up some extra profit by forcing folks who don't want to wait for 16GB to go with the more expensive 1TB build which, like me, they probably don't even need. Typical Apple: we'll give you what you need but only if you buy what we want you to.

Yep, think I got lucky. Seems to be completely sold out in my area now as well. Same day delivery option is no longer listed for my ZIP code.

I was eyeballing a 16/512 MBP in the new year so I started checking available in-store stock after Christmas and saw 16/1TB in stock and decided to go with that configuration; now that I'm ready to buy, that configuration seems to have disappeared from every store in my zip code. D'oh!

Give it a couple days. The 16/1 config for MBA/MBP’s has gone in and out of stock every couple of days at the four stores I’ve been tracking them at. Just be patient.

16/512 is not a configuration Apple stocks, ever. 16/1tb in space gray though, absolutely. I'm typing on one purchased on launch day back in Nov. Go for the 1tb if you want it asap!

I got a 16GB/1TB Air M1 in less than two hours via courier from a local apple store. Just check back, the inventory changes all the time.

I ordered around 7 AM and it arrived before noon Air 16/1.

The MBP 16/1 models pop up every couple of days but you have to be really quick to get one.

On December 26th, "Boxing Day," the day after Christmas, as I had been doing for quite some time over the month of December, I casually went to the Apple store online site to take a look at possible availability of what I wanted, the Space Grey M1 MBP with 1 TB SSD and 16 GB RAM. I was startled to see that, hey, wow, OMG, it actually was in stock! I promptly placed my order and within an hour and a half there was a nice young courier at my door with the Apple bag that had my name on it which contained the lovely new MBP I'd just ordered. Wheeeeee!!!! I love this machine, she's doing just great and so far, knock on wood, no problems! The convenience of the courier service really puts the cherry on the top of everything, too, especially now in this era of the pandemic. I'm happy with the entire experience!
