With the iPhone 4 they want it activated in the store to decrease the number of phones being sold afterward.

1. They don't need to touch the phone, you can do it - in the store.
2. You should ALWAYS open the phone before going home to make sure it works.
3. If you're trying to sell the phone just say it.

Correct, They don't care if your gonna sell the phone and use the old one, there still getting your money from it either way.

If you buy at the Apple or AT&T store your are required to activte. What's the big deal about opening the box?:D:confused: Lets say it's DIB then at least you will know before you get home.
maybe OP wants to do an unboxing video? idk
you paid 199,299 for your phone???
lol that would be an expensive iPhone
Your making this a bigger deal than it has to be for yourself. Open up the box yourself. All they did for me at the apple store on launch day is plug it into itunes for like 5 seconds and I was good to go.

When I picked up my iPhone 4 from AT&T, the guy told me that he needed to activate it in-store. I was slightly disappointed but told him to go ahead. However, he needed the account holder's (my father's) last 4 digits of SS#. I took a risk and told him that I didn't know, and he sent me on my way with my unopened phone in the box and a cute orange bag. I activated it myself at home. Honestly, it wasn't the end of the world if I didn't get to do it myself, but I kind of felt like a little kid at Christmas when I took the shrink wrap off the box and was the first one to touch the phone (obviously, other than the kind person that packaged it overseas). I guess we all have a little fanboy-ism in us...

OP, maybe you can go ahead and try what jmeyer86 did, just an idea, even though it may be hard to believe that you dont know your own last 4 digit of your SSN...

another idea would be just to ask the rep for the phone to "see it" and once you grab it just walk out of the store with it, this is a more rude aproach but I guess can be done, you wouldnt be stealing it as you already paid for it, just an idea (rude idea)... you can then activate it at home or just come back after you open it yourself to have it activated at the store...

that last bit was the worst advice i ever heard

It's just a phone? lol! maybe the AT&T worker will be like the one who activated my iPhone4 and drop it on the ground then gave me a 32GB for $199 because they didnt have any extra 16GB.

Just like opening my electronics at home where I'm more relaxed. The only reason I ordered it to an at&t store is the at&t employees fault for signing me up on a contract by mistake and leaving me no other option if I want to pay 299$

I picked up two iPhone 4's on June 29 at my local AT&T store. I asked the employee if I could activate them at home and he said it wasn't a problem. The phone's boxes were scanned in-store without opening them, the cell phone numbers transferred from our 3GS's to the 4's. When I went home, I just connected the phones to iTunes to activate them.

I learned a long time ago that different stores have different outcomes and AT&T is not consistent with their policies about anything.

I have a solution to your problem:

1. Open it at the store and let them activate it.

2. Put it back in the box and close the box.

3. Take it home and pretend it's the first time you've opened it and masturbate while you open it or whatever else you were planning to do.

4. Get over it.

5. Enjoy your phone.

Seriously, does anyone other than Apple fans get THIS worked up about opening a damn box? Wow....

Typical "Tuff Internet Guy" response. I'd like to see you make that same response to someone IRL and see what kind of response you get.

If you don't have a problem with opened boxes, that's fine. Apparently the OP does. You don't like the topic, click on the next.

Typical tough guy response to said tough guy response. LOL!

I wouldn't suggest doing this.

Thank goodness, I thought I was alone in thinking this....

These employees are just doing their jobs. As if they don't suck enough, now you people fuss and moan about something so damn trivial. You probably take pictures of your own unboxing as if it's your first born child uttering his first words. :)

This is very ridiculous....just tell them you would rather not have it opened in the store...and to show you written documentation stating the policy that they require the phone be opened before leaving store. Also get a written note stating that you would like a return period in which you would receive a full refund.

And THEY'RE being ridiculous...but you're demanding written documentation because they're making your life easier by not having to deal with it yourself.
