Did ancient peoples have the same fetishes for 25-year-old nostalgia as contemporary earth people seem to?
Depends on how you define "ancient". I'd say this "nostalgia" or interest in old things have been a male treat for centuries.
Shroud of Turin comes to mind, that was an artifact of great value already during the middle ages.

Good buy I think. A few decades from now this will make a profit, although I doubt that people who have €40k to spend on this need that profit. This will look cool in someone’s man cave.

Does anyone here have unopened Apple hardware tucked away in the attic?

At some point I thought about buying one of the “trashcan” Mac Pro models, figuring its shape would be appealing enough to someone in the future, but I never did.

Which of today’s hardware would qualify as interesting? The only thing I can think of is the Vision Pro. If virtual/augmented reality becomes a huge thing, then I suppose having Apple’s first device would be an interesting sale.

I think the AW changed everything for smartwatches

I have a working first gen, in perfect condition, and the box it came in. The box has a small chunk cut out by the previous owner. Presumably there was a price there and it was a gift. I even have the cellophane wrap marked “Don’t Steal Music”. I got them on eBay for a few bucks before they became desirable.

So not like the one that just sold, but might fetch a few bucks if I ever sell it. I should probably put it back in the box and stop using it.

Edit re comments about battery life. My first gen is surprisingly decent given its age. It lasts about 90 minutes. Way more than my old nano and mini, which hardly last at all despite being newer.

From all the videos DankPods has done on YouTube about old iPods the chances are that battery is completely dead and won’t hold a charge. It probably will switch on when connected to a Firewire cable though as those are great at waking up old iPods.

The Children, the Children please feed the Children.
This shows the economy is doing just fine somewhere just not here.
FORTYTHOUSAND,TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY SIX!
I was told as long has Nikes sell for over $100 that the economy is doing great!

I would so love to have an iPod Classic again, maybe with some updated features: SSD, USB-C, and bluetooth primarily. I don't want wifi or cellular. It's not meant for streaming music, but listening to what is stored on it. If Apple were to release that, it would be an instant buy for me.

If you know the sucker who bought that, please let him know I have and Apple I for sale. And it runs! I'm asking the low low price of $1,999,999.99.

Or you could just buy an iPhone 16 SE. Pretty much the same thing. Except better.

You paid big money from the auction, open the box for the first time and found out the device no longer work anymore.
It's a display piece. You're not supposed to open it. But, if you did - you'd find it was reboxed Russian knock off called iPоdиiка.

Although... That sounds like something you'd find Bart Simpson using in a very early Simpson's episode. Maybe that be the better deal?

Apple should bring back the iPod with enhanced audio and the original chip.
I bet it would sell like hotcakes

First time I ever bought apple stock was just after Sep 11, 2001 and just before ipod was announced. I think I paid $60 per share...

$10,066 was the buyers premium. It has been my experience that auction prices from the bigger houses never end on an even note (so to speak).
No it is not. $32,000 is the hammer price. Then 25% from that is $8000 something, that’s why it is at $40k total. Check the auction website, it shows how much the final price when it was sold

This is not something for common people like us to understand. Big league money 🤣
For me, I would prefer spend $200 for refurbished (guaranteed) working iPod classic 7th gen. Haha

Auctioneering has to be the biggest grift. Seller pays 25%, buyer pays 25%, auctioneer holds no stock.

So whats it like when you pay 40k for something like this just to keep it sealed. and it burns your house down when the battery de-laminates and self-immolates?

Not surprised to see unopened pieces to go for such amounts. Successful bidder might be hoping to sell it for even more in the future. Don't think it will work though as battery will not be able to hold any charge.
