I feel like I can speak for others on this, and due to conflicting information everywhere, I thought I'd ask.

As a current and original iPhone subscriber with AT&T, I'm paying the typical monthly service with voice, data, and text with no special conditions such as PAYG, corporate, or family plans. Pretty simple. Knowing that the service costs a little bit more a month, whats involved in the upgrade process with upgrading to a new 3G device on an existing iphone line of service? For owners in my situation, can we simply just walk into the Apple store this Friday, pay for the device and maybe an incidental fee, go home with a bricked phone, swap out the sim with the old, connect to iTunes, and activate at home?
