Have tried repairing the watch to my iphone with no improvement. Setting up as a new Watch I have not yet attempted. Besides having to redo my watch settings, Apple Pay, reinstall watch apps, etc, what data do I lose if I set up the watch as new without restoring from the last backup? Obviously I'll lose my activity for the day up that point (steps, calories, workouts). Do I lose historical health data associated with the watch?
All of my activity since I've owned the Watch still shows in my activity app on the phone. I don't think it can delete prior history out of your health app. It'll be like adding another source for that info (steps, calories, workouts). Aside from the settings, installing apps, Apple Pay.. I didn't notice anything else missing when I did it.

Ok, sorry for the delay. I've been back and forth with Apple a few times. They thought it was caused by email sync-ing to my watch and asked me to remove all the email accounts from my iPhone (why email would cause a battery drain while working out I have no idea). There was no difference.

I'm still working with Apple.

But so far the keep asking me to install logging profiles, use the watch for a few days, send them the logs, and then they suggest something that makes no difference.

I've tried unpairing and pairing. I've uninstalled all the apps. I setup as new. Nothing matters.

I'm not sure which is more frustrating; the battery life or that Apple has no idea why it's happening.

Strange. Sounds like you might have to send it in for repair or a battery replacement.

Doesn't make a difference, it's software not a hardware problem. I've already had mine replaced.

I picked up a gold Series 0 during Black Friday. Have the same problem with it, battery is fine except on any day I try using the workout app. Also got an email warning I was running out of iCloud storage. Had a look at the contents, my Health Kit data had ballooned to 4.5GB. I assume the work out app is continuously writing to the Health Kit database until the day rolls over.

So your saying iCloud/fitness Application has something to contribute to the failure of the software because it's full? @minifridge1138, what are your thoughts on this?

No, not that iCloud is a part of the problem. Just that because I was backing up to iCloud I noticed the excessive amount of health/workout data being written.

The battery drain only happens on days that the workout app has been used and seems to reset at midnight.

I think Finiska's explanation fits the facts. If the fitness app "goes nuts" and is writing data that could cause excessive battery usage. I don't have iCloud enabled, so I haven't seen the usage. Looking at capacity/usage I have 5.0 GB free out of 5.7 GB.

The problem does not appear to be in the watch's hardware (the problem didn't start until I had a new phone). Apple ran the battery diagnostic on my watch and it is healthy.

So what was the end result with your Watch? In need of replacement?

Saddly, no.

I'm still working to get logs to them, but the battery health test passed so no replacement for me. I really wish there was a way to wipe the HD and reinstall from scratch.

Just another update: I stopped using the workout app in November, I was at the gym today and decided to try tracking a workout for science.

Did 25 mins on the treadmill, 3hrs later and the battery has only dropped 10%. Not sure what's changed I'm using watchOS 3.1.1 and iOS 10.2. I'm going try tracking a bike ride again tomorrow to see the results of a workout using GPS.

iPhone 7 and WatchOS 3.1.1 has horrible battery life. Half that with previous versions of watchOS and iPhone 6. Re-installing the OS on the iPhone and re-installing the watchOS with re-pairing does absolutely nothing. There is a drain somewhere in the OS, either iOS or watchOS or both. Send Apple feedback at www.apple.com/feedback

And it's nothing personal to you, but this is why I never update iOS software on the first day anymore. Too many issues and too many problems are not fully ready for public release, when they should be in reality. I'm curious to see when Apple re-release 3.1.1.

Yet another update: I've been tracking bike rides and gym workouts for the last two days. Battery life is just as mildly unimpressive as you would expect for a series zero. I have no idea if it's 3.1.1 or what that fixed the problem but I'm not willing to try tracking workouts with my watch running 3.1 in case it screws everything up again.

That's strange. Because I've had outstanding battery life with 3.1. I did not upgrade to iOS 3 .1 .1, mainly being the uncertainty of first day launch issues.

Whatever it is causing the battery drainage, it's all managed through software. And I'm not exactly sure what tweaks they're making to improve the efficiency of the battery.

No way!! It can't be because I took my original AW from the charger t 8:15am and right now I am at Starbucks at 8:20pm with battery reads 84% and I have an iPhone 7 Plus....both are iOS 10.2 and WatchOS 3.1.1.

Similar issue here. I upgraded from a 6S to a 7+ on Friday. Set up the watch as new after some initial pairing problems. Battery life less than half what it was on the 6S. After reading through this thread I turned off most of the apes with background refresh. I'll keep an eye on it. The 2-3 times I used the workout app, the watch was almost dead after 30 minutes.

Which generation Apple Watch are you using? Are you currently using watchOS 3 .1?

So my final update. Battery life is great again. I can now go 24+ hours on a single charge (but I don't recommend it).

What did I do to fix it? I upgraded to 3.1.3.

Apple support was eager to help, but unable to do so. They just wanted logs. Technically, I'm still waiting for them to "follow up with engineering and get back to me" and have been waiting for over a month.

I also want to change my answer: I don't think it was the fitness app that was causing the problem. I think the battery drained whenever it was looking for a wifi connection. I went on a 6+ hour drive (before the 3.1.3 update) and the battery was died when I got to my destination. I was basically sitting still, but was never within range of my wifi.
