Ok lets figure this out, we are at 10.4 now 10.0 started in 2001 so say 2 years per update would make it like 7 years before OS11 so Id say we have time. Plus aren't these upgrades gonna be spread out more after 10.5

keep in mind that 10.10 is not the same thing as 11.0

also 10.10 is the exact same thing as 10.1

so in theory Apple has already released 10.4000000000

:p

has apple ever in history released something like that (10.11)

BTW tons of companies release things as 10.4.7 with a 2nd decimal! but ive never seen something like 10.11

umm, you realize we're not dealing with actual numbers here, right? I would have thought the second decimal would be enough for people to realize that.

in this numbering system, 10.10 is not the same as 10.1; likewise, 10.4.10 is not the same as 10.4.1.

it is three separate numbers, with a period inbetween, not a single number with a decimal... and then another decimal... thus, for the last time, since 10 is greater than 1, 10.10.0 is greater than 10.1.0

I'm with you Plink... I don't "get" why it's so difficult to grasp the concept. I guess people are just used to the old "once you get to 9", bump up the other number deal. They could have 10.135.78 if they wanted. Although by that time it would be "very old" marketing. I'd be surprised if internally they didn't have something like 10.4.7.14 or whatever, as each update becomes closer to release.

Back on track though, if Apple were to keep to a 24 month release schedule, it would be like 2015 for 10.9 or whatever. So I'd say thinking about "11" is a ways out.

Then again, they could chop it after 10.6 and make it 11.0 if they wanted. As far as 5 years from now, who knows? Tech gets faster and more advanced every day, so when it eventually rolls around it's going to be nothing less than spectacular. By that time who knows what their share of the market will be? The only thing I hope is that they won't tick people off like MS has, and become a target for viruses. Granted all aren't created simply to get back as MS, but that's always been a big kicker for it.

It would be cool if it was a HAL-9000 on crack though. :D

Notice in this screenshot from Skype.com, that the version is 1.5.0.80. This is read as One-point-five-point-zero-point-eighty. Version numbers are not read like regular numbers. Each dot is another step of development. Therefore, 1.5.0.8 is a smaller build of the software than 1.5.0.80 and even if OS X (pronounced Oh-Ess-Ten, not Oss-Ex like my ignorant roommate calls it) could reach version number 10.10 or 10.11 or even 10.14.3.1042, so there you have it.

Eh, it could be worse, try explaining the version numbering system of TeX (Typesetting language)

This argument has been discussed elsewhere on this site. The numbers can go as high as they want. It just turns out that .9 has been a stopping point but that doesn't mean that they could not go beyond if they choose. As for when OS11 will come out it wont be for many years. What's to say that OS10 wont go another 15 years.

While I agree that the fundamental UI will be the biggest change....

How about voice command? Yeah, I know, it sucks now but we're talking about the future here. Who wasn't wanted to walk into their home and say "Computer, Earl Grey Tea, Hot"?

I appreciate the sentiment and all, but dude....
   It's Tea, Earl Grey, Hot!

And before you ask, I've gone into my system files to include the computer sound from star trek : TNG as the voice command recognition sound ( and my halloween costume is a ST: Insurrection/late DS9/Nemesis dress uniform) :)

Frankly, I think it will be a combo of voice recognition (probably still optional) and some other interfaces. Frankly, I think, type, and click faster than I talk.

Great, now next thing you know, we're gonna start having threads that say "Should I buy OS X or wait until OS XI comes out?"

The system numbering was changed into a silly hybrid of old and new when the Unix core materialized. Apple started over at 0, they just put a 10 in front of it, sometimes in the form X. They shouldn't be labeled 10.xxxx anymore IMO. Panther, Tiger, etc. have not been incremental .1 upgrades, proved by having to pay for them. Maybe OSX 1, 2, 3 or something. Tiger is essentially System 14 for Macs, counting from 1984. Or OSX 5, counting from 2001.

At this point, I consider the X in the moniker "OSX" to mean "Mac OS using uniX", than "OSTen" as in the number 10. (even though it is pronounced "Ten") And we are currently on v4.8 of the Mac/Unix OS.

Steve calls it OS Ten. He's always called it OS Ten and made a big song-and-dance about calling it OS Ten when it was launched. The ads refer to it as OS Ten, everyone from Apple ever interviewed about it calls it OS Ten.

I guess I stand corrected then.
But I still don't think there'll ever be an OS 11. Maybe something like "Apple Zebra", where they dispense with the nummeral system all together. And gets rid of that "OS", it's too geeky.
Anyway, it's impossible to predict what technology will be powering the next major overhaul of Mac OS, as we have no idea when it'll be introduced. Maybe in two years, maybe in 20. But it'll probably be quite different from what we have now.

what I meant by OS 11 was a new OS that was more significantly, maybe more fundamentally, changed than the various 10.x have been from each other.

I am talking about things like new GUI or UI paradigm. New filesystem, microkernel. These kinds of things if not new from groundup, atleast the kind of more fundamental changes that having sweeping effects across experience overall capability of OS. This, to me, is very different from what the various advances that have come with each 10.x. The latter are really more just new features and apps -- things like adding widgets, minor speed improvements, new little apps like iChat AV and Spotlight etc. -- more like little things that sweeten package but not make fundamentally different or new package.

Os11

how about finishing OS X and calling it 11... kinda sick of buying new OS's all the time.. and please don't drop legacy like you did from OS9 to OSX... if it aint broken don't fix it... just finish what you started...

DD

I think it won't be too long before they switch to OS 11. They keep nameing OS X after big cats. Cheetah, Tiger, Leopard, etc. Pretty soon, they're gonna run out of big cats.:D

I mean, what's 10.6 gonna be? Lion? :D

Apple has trademarks on Lynx and Cougar, so it's not unreasonable to assume that they would be up next, should Apple choose to use them.

here's something to those stubborn ones who can't comprehend the concept of 10.10 being different from 10.10

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26250

check out the Information Related to Version ___

if you pull down the menu, it's clear that in this case, 2.10 is not 2.1, and version goes beyond 2.10 into 2.11 and currently 2.12

... you think your mathematical skill is so advanced, more so than just anybody here? i wonder what's the most advanced math course you've taken...

well Vista looks like it's finally matched OS X in the major area Mac's been dominating the last 5 years -- sweet, vector graphics, aqualike, GUI. It's Apple's job to be ahead, not to not fix what aint broken, and to revolutionize leaving the followers scrambling to catch up for 5 yrs. I'd like to see an OS 11 in like 3 years, not ten. Otherwise, Vista will plain have a ton of advantages over MacOS.

Actually, Apple is recycling numbers. OS 11 will never come. Apple knows that people only have 10 fingers to count on. You know Apple, keep it simple. OS 10, is really OS 2 and OS 11 is 3.

This will be Job's little surprise in the future, "Well you all thought we were going to bring out OS 11 today, well actually it's OS 3, we were using binary." The crowd will go wild and he will then reintroduce the Newton, the Cube and a device that allows pigs to be aerial (With out wings!).

Here is my take

10 (X) - Platform
4 - Version
8 - Service Release

Equals 10.4.8

So a 10.11 is not impossible.

i think Apple will rename the OS when they get to the end of OS X. OS "eleven" just doesn't sound or look cool and, as evidenced by the discussion here, leads to numbering issues and confusion.

Wirelessly posted (NokiaN70-1/2.0539.1.2/SN359380002126483 Series60/2.8 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

For features
some sort of eye candy similar to compiz etc on linux with a plugin system.

I have no idea when it will be released or what great, new features it will have, but I will be one of the first in line for OS eks-eye.
