OS 3 upgrade on different computer, now stuck on "connect to itunes"

I somewhat successfully applied the update to my 3g by manually downloading and specifying the ipkg file in iTunes (proxy blocks the xml file). But, I'm not on my home computer. I know some previous updates didn't wipe out the whole phone, but this one has my phone stuck on the "connect to iTunes" screen with the usb cable and iTunes icon.

Is this recoverable away from home or am I SOL?
