I'm having an issue with 3D gaming on OS 9.2.2.

First I tried a Rage 128 Orion 16MB PCI card on a Powermac 9600/300( 604ev ). On Quake 3 and JK2 the issue is both games freeze the system just after I get the 3D context, not even the intro plays, requiring a force restart. I didn't think much of it, maybe an issue with the patched Old World support for 9.2.x from OS 9 helper, or maybe this old Rage card had a hardware issue.

So I put the card in my Beige G3 with a 434Mhz G4 with a fresh install universal of OS 9.2.2, exact same issue, I figured something failed on the Rage card so I installed a PC flashed Radeon 7000 PCI 64MB, brand new NOS card with the full Mac FCode ROM, exact same issue.

So I tested both ATI cards in OS X 10.2.3 and OS X 10.4.11 in the Beige. Same install of the games and they work just fine, no issue in extended testing.

I tried to install the Jan 2005 driver updates for OS 9.2.2 from ATI that supports both of these cards, still exact same issue on both machines. So I though maybe an issue with my OS 9 install itself. I installed from a grey OEM bootable install disc and did the universal install on the Beige. I was having an issue with USB 1.1 not working on the Beige under OS 9 and installing the USB Drivers from the 9600's system folder fixed the issue, so I figure that this OEM iBook 9.2.2 disc doesn't really do a fully Universal install.

Next I ran the OS 9.2.2 update on the Beige, still the same issue. Then I copied over the System Folder from my iBook G4 with Radeon 9200 AGP as 3D graphics works just fine on this hacked 9.2.2 install, then I updated the ATI drivers, exact same issue.

I'm at a loss, not real sure what the issue is?

It seems that the ATI Graphics Accelerator v5.6.9 extension is causing the lockups, disabling it renders 3D and DVD playback working without issue, but it really isn't a solution as the disables 2D desktop acceleration.

It's really odd, as I know both the Rage 128 Orion and Radeon 7000 PCI should work with this extension enabled in Old World Macs. Both cards work just fine in my Quicksilver G4 with this extension enabled.

I can't remember, did the program Conflict Catcher debug conflicts with Extensions under OS 9?

Maybe it's just a conflict with another extension in my OS 9 install.

Conflict Catcher had a conflict determining algorithm that used some kind of binary search pattern method for finding conflicts. It would enable half the extensions for the next boot, ask the user if the problem occurred, and based on that, it would enable a new set of extensions. I guess it could find a conflict in log-n boots. I don't remember the last time I used it though. I had setup different Extension Sets in Conflict Catcher for different purposes or maybe to label certain extensions as incompatible in certain situations.
