Readily available huh? So tell me where can I get:

- Protools for OS X
- Emagic Sounddiver for OS X
- Digital Performer for OS X
- Unisyn for OS X
- Nuendo for OS X
- QuarkXPress for OS X

Protools for OSX is due in January. Kind of funny that when Apple states that the new machines will only boot into OS X. That companies are NOW getting their collectivej butts together and getting it done.

I supose thats possible, but similarly unlikely, as it stretches their manufacturering rather thin across a lot of products (two ibooks, two eMacs, the CRt imac, G4 iMac, powerbook and powermac).

As someone pointed out in the education thread, Apple still offers 733 Quicksilvers to the education market.

The education notice was really more of an "We recognize that you folks budget in August, and won't have money to replace machines AND software should a machine go down between January and July, so we'll keep offering you some of our current products to cover you through to the end of the school year.

But, you'd better be prepared to earmark some cash for september..."

Afterall, as I noted in the educaton thread, you're not really expecting a CRT iMac upgrade at MWNY are ya?

Our school server is still on NT, they havn't been able to impliment Win 2000 yet. Large scale changes do not move fast in education.

Might want to mention to IT that Microsoft begins the retirement process for NT January 1/2003, and is only promising to continue to provide patches until January 1/2004...

Probably time to look at putting that beast to bed.

OS9, Font-Smoothing issues in X

I don't understand how Apple can ditch OS9 without solving the Font-smoothing issues with OSX. Unless I am unaware of something, I don't believe there is any way to do it without any third-party download. I am curious to see what Quark for Jaguar will look like and if they will solve this issue... because I know the print design people will not be happy about this.

This is particularly an issue with designers who will not be able to see the "true" output of their work on their screen. If all of the fonts are smoothed on your website, its cool... but 95% of the viewing public won't see it that way, and could cause poor design decisions. Same holds true for print.

Forgive my ignorance if I am wrong about this, and please let me know if there is a solution to this issue. But I certainly do not see it yet.

We Are Not Safe Ither

Hey we are no safer in this OS9 Boot Dpt. A simple Firmware Update Can have that No OS9 boot Right in it. And Apple Would Most Likely Not Mention it. So don't think you and I are so safe

What font smoothing problem?

I'm a print designer using InDesign and font smoothing has not caused me to see my projects any differently nor has it caused me to make any bad design decisions. I would assume that when Quirk for OS X shows its ugly face it won't be any different. And if font smoothing bothers you that much use Tinkertool and turn it off.

i did wrong font

they all keep getting pushed back..

G5: They all keep getting pushed back at first it was Apple's fault with core midi and audio before Jag (may still be clicks and pops) Protools was 2nd half 2002, then Nov., then Dec., now Jan, same for the other Music Apps. Hopefully they are doing it right by taking there time and there wont be many bugs or lots of relearning and weekly updates. I think DP3 from Motu will be the last one out the door as far as DAWS go because they must make sure it work s with all of their and many others hardware as they know what there users use, usb and serial dual midi interfaces(some still like the timing of serial) and they want there's to look like a new App not like the Ancient Logic and pc-clone vst interfaces.

Someone could really clean up by making a App the will let you integrate current OS9 VST plugins and ASIO sound cards and USB/serial midi cards into the OSX audio/midi scheme, but then its only recently (JAG) has been a midi/audio scheme.

There are still many current shipping sound cards that we cant use and some good selling old ones (not apples fault anymore UAD, powercore, yamaha dspfactory mlan,sw1000g, emagic's audiowerk cards, and virtually every serial and usb midi interface not introduced or made by the same company this year) . Anyway with in about 1-3 years all the apps and plugins and drivers should have matured and OSX will then be the S!!!!
but for know OS9 is king with most for mission critical audio.
