I had my first OS (iOS 12.0.1) crash on my XS Max yesterday. I'm not exactly sure what caused it, but immediately prior I was dismissing a few apps from the recently used apps screen. The phone's screen turned black. I tapped the screen, and the unlock screen appeared. But when I swiped up, the screen turned black again. After trying to get past the lock screen unsuccessfully a few more times, I did a forced restart. It's been working OK since.

I took a look at the phone's analytics data found in the privacy section of the settings, and I couldn't find anything that corresponded to the time of the event. But while I was in the privacy section, I decided to authorize the analytics data to be sent to Apple. I usually don't allow that, but this is new hardware with a new OS so maybe it might help Apple improve the software.

Has this happened to you any more times?

I have gone through 3 phones now and all of them do it to me randomly. I thought it was a hardware problem but I guess software?

I think it really depends on how you are using your phone. What software you are using, how you connect to the internet, are you running any special profiles / certificated for work? Operating systems are pretty complex. I would say I my self haven't experience that same issues. But, I'm sure we are using the phones in very different ways.
