OS doesn't remember browser and messaging preferences

Hello all,

I'm having a problem that I have been having ever since I got my MBP last May. The problem has persisted from the preinstalled Tiger (i think 10.4.8?) up through 10.5.2.

I try to set my default browser to Firefox and my default messaging client to Adium, and after a reset, both of the defaults get reverted to Safari and iChat. Is there any way to stop this from happening? It is very frustrating and definitely should not be happening.
