In addition to that (sorry for hi-jacking this), how can one reduce the size of said system fonts in 10.4?

It is Lucida Grande, as are all system fonts.
The menu fonts are fixed. The only way to change the size of the menu fonts is to change the resolution.
The fonts in Finder can be enlarged or reduced from Finder menu >> View >> Show view options >> Text size.
