Hi guys new to this forum hope I am doing this right.

This is my dilemma, I have a Mac Pro Tower mid 2012 server. My hard drive is going and purchased a Samsung SSD drive. When I connected the SSD drive I held down Command+R to get a gray screen and use Disk Utilities to format my new SSD drive. What I want is to format the Drive to APFS format so I can upgrade to High Sierra. Since my OS is only at Sierra 12.6 my Disk Utilities will only format Journaled and Utilities does NOT give me the option to format APFS format. I am assuming it’s not giving me APFS option because it’s Sierra and not High Sierra. I am in a loop that I can’t get out. So since the SSD drive is not fomented APFS it will not allow me to upgrade to High Sierra. Anyone know how I can format SSD drive to APFS while on OS Sierra ?

You need to install Sierra first, then update the firmware using the High Sierra installer itself to be able to install High Sierra. The installer for High Sierra will convert the drive to APFS at install time. The firmware cannot be upgraded when installing from a bootable USB installer.

well that’s the problem my Samsun SSD drive can’t upgrade to High Sierra unless it’s formatted to APFS. I am in a stuck loop. macOS Sierra disk utilities does not offer APFS format option. I searched other forums and other people have the same issue. Uuuhhhggg

Like I said: install Sierra first and then upgrade from there.

I get this window and I have done exactly what it says but High Sierra will not install. I have down this 3 times and still no high Sierra. Losing my hair and can’t figure this out :)

Do you have a non-standard graphics card installed in the computer? If so, you need to put the original back in for the firmware update to work.
You've followed the exact instructions?
Shut down the computer (not restart)
Press and hold the power button until you get the long beep and/or flashing power light?

High Sierra doesn't need APFS format , but can be installed in HFS+ too.
Anyway the disc you install High Sierra should be internal in the SATA 2 drive bay.
As has been said before you need to install the original GPU (e.g.GT120) for the firmware update .

Thank you I will try this and hope it works. So far everything has failed and I get an error when trying to install ANY kind of macOS system on the Samsung SSD drive. Going bonkers!

Actually I did update my graphics card from a Radeon ATI that came with the computer to the Radeon Saphire RX580. Plus added new meme our from 2gb x 4 slots to 8gb x 4 slots. Do you think I should put back the old Radeon ATI card? Yes I also did the whole hole button till you hear a long TONE and still can’t install any macOS. Just confused why would a graphics card make a difference when trying to instal macOS on a ssd drive?

For reasons I don’t know, the firmware update required to install 10.13.6 requires having an original Apple graphics card in the computer, so reinstall that and try again.
