I figured it out...

Marketing will use the term OS X Yosemite. If you visit Apple store they guys and gals in blue will go by name Yosemite, Mavericks, etc.

The geeks will say OS X ten.ten
...

They don't really mention the OS X version number. Never have since they started using the cat names as actual names rather than code names.

I was wondering the same.

The major version is OS 10 (Roman numeral X)
The minor version .10, .9, .8 .... coincides with the friendly-name.

Though I'm still not sure this isn't a joke/troll thread.
