New Mac Book Tuesday!!!

(forgive me if it's already been said, I don't feel like reading 8 pages of how some OS that I don't own got updated...)

Note added to news story:
As Apple notes, PowerPC-based Macs will restart twice rather than once after the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.6. (Thanks to member WildCowboy for suggesting we mention this.)

Well after 25mins I gave up and rebooted this time with verbose on.

Load of /sbin/launchd, errno 88, trying /sbin/mach_init
Load of /sbin/launchd failed, errno 88
in6_ifattach_loopback: failed to configure the loopback address on lo0 (errno=55)

I think I can safely say that my OS is toast..
I feel so bad for you BUT you really didn't do it right. ALWAYS shut down all apps and repair permissions b4 running the COMBO updater - never the incremental. Leaving applications running and not repairing permissions before running only the Combo is just asking for trouble. Sorry Eddy. You really didn't follow protocol. :(

Hmm.. wonder if that is what happened to my machine.. it sits there at the Apple logo ( during reboot ) with the progress circle rotating.. maybe I should be a bit more patient ( than waiting 10 minutes for it to do nothing ).

This same thing is happening to me. How long does the first reboot take? Hopefully less than 10 minutes!

Stella: Let me know if you figure/have figured out how to fix this. Thanks!

It was a painful 3+ minutes for me...if you have a slower computer, it will likely take a fair bit longer. I would really just give it some time. And don't watch it...a watched computer never boots.

New Phones

Thank you, Apple! What a timely gift. Coincidentally, my 2-year-old phone died yesterday.

Apple lists all supported phones here:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html

...so I compared that with a cache of yesterday's version of that list to come up with a list of newly added phones. Here it is:

RAZR v3c

I don't think leaving apps running is a problem--if it was, Apple could simply quit all apps while updating. I regularly keep right on working while I do updates--including running several updaters at once (they automatically take turns appropriately).

Quitting all apps "just to be safe" isn't a bad practice, but in my experience it's not actually necessary.

Yep, 10.4.6 totally screwed my 1ghz Ti Powerbook. I tried to dl the update, first i got the install error saying it moved the update to the trash etc... Then i tried redownloading it, it gave me a different error (i believe the networking error). so i though whatever ill just reboot. but first i tried to run isync to backup my contacts and calanders to my phone. no go. isync would bounce once in the dock and then just stop/not open. did that every time i tried to run it. all while i was running all my ther apps fine. hrmmm... so i try to log out. it logs out and goes to the spinning spokes and just sits there for a good 3-5 minutes, wont go to the login screen. i reboot, and now it sits here at the apple logo and spinning "spokes". I guess i havent let it go for more than 10 minutes yet but this is pretty discouraging already... :(

upgraded on iMac G5 and can no longer connect to the internet.. and don't know how to fix it..

my iMac isn't recognizing my USB network adapter
..i'll find a solution sooner or later :p

i also upgraded on my MBP with no problems

Made no dif on my shuffle and iSync didn't make my Treo 600 run OSX like I expected. It still runs Palm OS 5.2. It definitely made my iPod video more snappy and classic runs Word 5.1 faster than OSX runs Word 2004, but that might not be new. Calculator now launches much faster, from 1 second to probably .85 seconds. VPC win XP is still slow, but usable on my ibook 366 Mhz special edition. The fan problem I wasn't having on my DP G5 still isn't there. And random crashes--gone, just like they were in 10.4-10.4.5. This is the best update ever!

/private/etc/rc changed

Running like a dream on my 15" 1,5 Ghz.

BUT, my changes to /private/etc/rc to allow my swap files to exist on a seperate partition have been trashed. Just a heads up!

Good luck to those of you with issues!

Oh thank effing god.
Surprise, surprise... it wasn't a Quark problem.

Or Apple got tired of waiting for Quark to fix their code and hacked up a workaround. I don't know of any other apps that have this problem.

Just installed the 10.4.6 update. After the 2 reboots others have mentioned I repaired permissions and rebooted again.

Mail will not load. After a long period of spinning beachball, I get the error:

Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full.

You must free us some space in your home directory folder before using Mail. Delete unneeded documents or move documents to another volume.

I have 10 gig free on the drive.

Also, my iPod will not update since 10.4.6. iTunes loads then, after another long period of spinning beachball, I get the error:

The iPod "Video iPod"cannot be updated. The disk could not be read from or written to.

Other areas of the OS now feature extended spinning beachball action too.

Any suggestions?

Chris.

Hmmmm... update killed mail for me as well... no emails in in box and says im over quota.... (i know im not)

Running 10.4.6 OK on the 12" AlBook 1.33

I didn't read the part about the 2x startup before I started installing, but then again I wasn't really watching it. I just happened to hear the chime twice and I was like WTF? But it seems like it's going OK now.

Wager 10.4.7 or 10.5 next?

Wow, this really screwed up my Microsoft Word. I can't save any files cuz the beachball keeps running. Apple has seemed to really drop the ball on this one.

This is exactly what happened to me. Also on a 1Ghz Ti Powerbook. I've resorted to booting from the Tiger install DVD, it won't repair it. Says I need to do a fresh install. So I'm currently copying my home dir off to an external drive. Pain that "tar" won't do it when running from a DVD. It needs more tmp space.

Now I get to find out how good my backups were :) Not sure where my Retrospect CD is though..

Good luck to everyone else having this issue - I'm glad that I have my 12" Albook handy to lookup tips etc.

Cheers, Ed.
