Why do I have more than half of my physical memory sitting unused, whereas my pagefile is already more than 8 GB big?

I have a Macbook Pro with 6GB RAM and the rather slow 250GB Hitachi harddrive, that came with the notebook.

The harddrive is quite full and therefor any operation via swapfile exaggerated slow.

Are there any settings for first using system memory and then using swapfile?

That screenshot says "0 bytes" for swap used. VM size is not swapfile size.

    10.5.6 Is Deadly

I have a computer and a CCC cloned version on an external hard drive. I upgraded my clone to 10.5.6. No problem. I upgraded my computer. Wow. I can't log in anymore. It almost logs in, then it crashes. I can log in as other users though, just not my main one.:eek::( So now I'm running of a backup on a USB hard drive.
