I bought a MacBook Pro 2.53ghz 13-inch standard configuration a few days ago. My system crashed once yesterday and now again today. Amongst the applications I had running was SecondLife, on both occasions I was using this program primarily. Could it be possible that SecondLife is causing the system to crash? My reason for speculating upon this is due to the fact that in Windows and Linux, SecondLife is a notoriously buggy and badly written program that is prone to crashing, however on OS X it seemed to run smooth which I found odd.

Has anyone had a similar experience or able to shed any light on the matter? Thanks!

Maybe it's telling you that you should concentrate more on your "First Life" ;-)

In all seriousness, you might want to peruse the Second Life support pages. If it's widespread, surely you won't be the only one experiencing it.
