OS X Mail Marked as Read?

Is there a way to setup mail not mark items as read when they are selected? I know in Windows with Outlook you have an option for something like that.

You can mark them as unread after you select it, otherwise no.

Dang, I wanted this same functionality. Nothing has changed since this thread? I sometimes look at an email but leave it marked as unread until I "address" whatever needs done.
