the only time I have seen more then 1GB of ram on a G3 "machine" (not counting G3 upgraded macs like the 9500/9600 ) is when I was messing with QEMU which emulates a Power Mac G3 beige/Blue and white while if I gave it 2GB of ram it Kernel panicked but if I gave it 2040MB of ram It booted...

The Power Macintosh 9600 can accept 1.5 GB of RAM, but that is a 604e/604ev processor. The B&W and PCI G4s had a the 1 GB limit which was upped to 2 GB with the AGP graphics G4s.

I was actually referring to the early model iMac/eMac G4s, I should have specified. AGP Sawtooths can take 2 GB, even though 1 GB is exactly what both of mine have installed. One of them even came from the factory with 1 GB.

I'm running Tiger on a 350MHz iMac G3. It works. Giving it more RAM gave it a boost but it's still slow. I swapped in the original HD which is running OS X Panther (10.3) and performance was much better. After experiencing Panther and Tiger on the 350MHz G3, I'd recommend for lower end G3 models (under 350MHz) we're best to stay with 10.3 or below for a good experience.

According to Intell, Panther is better than Jaguar on any hardware, in speed and stability, etc. I don't know about Puma and Cheetah but I would think so. So this means you should always use Panther instead of Jaguar or below.

Due to the lack of software support for 10.0-10.2 it is best to stick with 10.3. Keep in mind, that up until around when Panther was released, Macs shipped new with OS 9 still and most users just used OS 9. As a result, the catalog of software available on the Internet will be mainly 10.3+. Now, if you wanted to use the web then your option is going to be TenFourFox, which as the name hints to, begins with OS X Tiger.

That's really good to know. Thanks Poiihy and Altemose. :D I haven't had experience with OS X before 10.3. I'll keep that in mind when / if I get more PowerPC Macs.

Did you use Xpostfacto to install Tiger on this machine? I have an indigo Imac G3 with the same 350Mhz CPU and 512Mb of RAM. Its running Panther but I want to get Tiger on it. Just for a neat little project.

I think I will go for Panther or OS9. I don't see any reason for slowing it further down by installing a new OS. Thanks for all the inputs:)

That is pretty much your best choice. Panther (given 256mb or more) will run quite smooth on that model. Its sad, that i love these imac G3's sooo much. Ive been arouund them for almost a decade using them. But ive never ever had a chance to see a tray loader in person. :( Ive used snow imacs the most indigos a graphite, my tangerine but never a green one, flower power and not a single Tray loader.
Hope you enjoy it. Keep us posted.

I installed Tiger on my 600MHz iMac G3 and swapped the HD into the 350MHz. Cheating but it still booted just fine. :)

I have a Tray Load 333 iMac.... It needs a new PAV board, CD Drive, along with the cages and IDE cable for the CD Drive but it works good... well will once its fixed... If you want it it's yours for the shipping cost.

Ive seen you post this before.. you just want to get rid of it huh? Where are you located? And dumb question.. Whats a PAV board? And idk. The Indigo i got from a local recycler. Maybe ill just wait and pray i can get one from there. Preffered a later model bondi.

Thats interesting, i do have my favourite mac the tangerine model a 400Mhz running tiger. maybe ill pull the drive and use it to get tiger on the 350 hard drive. Thanks So it works all drivers no issues?

And do you think this would work if i install Tiger on My Imac G3 and put it in my Beige G3?

I am in Minnesota the PAV board is the Power Supply/ Audio/video board for the iMac.

Keep in mind, at least with the iMac G3s you want the system in the boot partition and the boot partition no larger than 8GB. The rest of the drive you can partition as you like.

You also want to make sure that when you do partition the first one that you have the Install OS9 drivers option checked.

I had to do this with my 233 tray loader to get it to boot Tiger. Of course, I installed Tiger using an external case via Firewire to my Quicksilver and then just put the drive back in the iMac.

why no larger then 8gb? i currently have my 400Mhz G3 running 60gb partition in tiger and my 350Mhz Panther 15gb hard drive full partition..

Well, I'm speaking solely to the iMac G3. Perhaps later revisions with higher processors are different, but my 233mhz required that I make a bootable partition no larger than 8GB with the OS9 drivers.

There's a reason for that, but it's been awhile so I'd have to go look it up.

That was it. The tray loaders can only read the first 8GB of a partition. If boot files are anywhere else – no boot.

I know that OWR Macs that can boot OS X have the same issue-not sure what causes it, but it's pretty well known. It was also quite maddening the first time I installed OS X on a Beige G3-it refused to install(gave me an exclamation point over the drive) and I had to do a lot of digging to find the reason.
