After some initial confusion of WHY my OSX SERVER software suddenly says my "model is not supported" (it IS a Mac Mini SERVER Edition after all!!!!). It seems there is a working OSX Server for Mavericks BUT they want $20 for it. Great. I bought the expensive Mac Mini Server model that comes with server and I don't even get an update for it with the otherwise FREE Mavericks update? What a crock. They didn't warn me that my Server was going to stop working and charge me a hidden $20 fee. So much for the "free" upgrade to Mavericks....

Why bother paying the $20 either? OSX is scheduled to be updated EVERY YEAR from now on. That means ANOTHER $20 for OSX Server. It seems they found a way to screw SOME OSX users over and over and over anyway. Apple SUCKS.

Seriously, it's a $20 upgrade. The only time I can imagine getting bent out of shape over a "forced" software upgrade is if the Mac was only a month or two old, though in that instance I would bet on Apple working with you to provide a free solution. If this is the case then contact AppleCare and (without losing your temper as you have here) explain the situation, I assure you if you're patient they'll work with you to make things right.

Side note - If you're using Server then it's rightfully assumed that you're a power user either using Server for business purposes or for a complex home environment. Either way it's very safe to assume you're not someone who would be classified as a "normal consumer" user. As such, it's reasonable to assume that you would have done your homework on compatibilities, costs, deployment, etc before upgrading on release day. This really isn't on Apple's shoulders.

I say this as an IT professional (Mac Admin) who oversees a Mac Pro server (still running 10.8 Server), a Mac mini server (still running 10.8 Server) and roughly 170~ Macs ranging from 10.3 to 10.9. I paid $100 for a developer account and have been running 10.9 Server for months now on a spare Mac mini to ensure compatibility before the new 10.9 Macs start arriving. Not doing this and jumping in blindly would have been very careless and could have likely cost me my job.

And again, it's $20. Thats the same that Mountain Lion cost when it was released, Server was another $20 on top of that if my memory serves me correctly. Look at it this way, for their professional and pro-sumer users Apple dropped the upgrade price by 50%.

Clearly Apple sucks and is malicious, especially when compared to any other major software developer.

I just started the upgrade on my Mountain Lion Server machine and this is what I got:

Did you not get that message?

Quoting for good measure.

To the OP: I saw this on 3 machines. An Xserve, a MP tower, mini server. All warned me, before hand. I wouldn't be surprised if you clicked through, like most all of us do, so quickly you didn't realize it wasn't just a license agreement.

I think we have all fallen into the trap of dismissing these alerts...because of whatever reason.

What bothers me the most, is that Apple seems to treat SERVER like an independent OS but it actually it is more of an APP (as some have pointed out). Or something along those lines.

This inevitably leads to confusion or preconceived views of how this links to the underlying OSX upgrade.

What warning? There was no warning here. I'm sure you don't believe that, but whatever. My post was to warn others not to invite flamers to lecture me how cheap OSX Server is. But it added new features... and yet it lacks features that the previous versions had (like configuring NFS for you; now you have to use the shell instead if you want it. I mean WTF is the point of having a Server Application that simplifies networking setup and control when they take features away?). Frankly, given the utter non-functionality of networking in OSX these days (e.g. SMB does not work with older programs like XBMC Eden on an AppleTV; I have to use SMBUp to get a compatible version and thus it's one less thing for OSX proper to configure), I'm not really sure I even need or want the server app. It's hard to tell, really since I cannot try out the new version to see if it fixed the problems and missing features of the old one. I know $20 is dirt dirt cheap to find out (since the App store doesn't allow demos of any kind to try before you buy regardless of the vendor), but I might just pass.

Well, despite you telling me what it told me (since apparently you were here), it did not warn about anything here, but then it also switched my primary/secondary monitors around without asking and wiped out my iTunes version that still had Cover Flow (that I preferred to the newer versions and again without asking. Ironically, it still had to be updated to get the latest version so why did it even bother to replace it instead of just letting the App store offer the update? Mountain Lion did not force an iTunes update when I used that on my Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard).

And frankly, if you think I'm stupid enough to not have a full bootable backup that would restore Mountain Lion (vis-a-vis Carbon Copy Cloner) you'd be dead wrong. I can put it back in short order. But it's a question of whether the good outweighs the bad, etc. That doesn't mean people shouldn't know about these things. But that's right. YOUR version warned you. But obviously I posted here because I KNEW that it was going to do that. Sure.

Lecture on!

I can also confirm that there is a warning regarding the server software when you choose to upgrade to mavericks. Your thread reads more like a hissy-fit than a warning tbh, but whatever. Reinstall mountain lion and mountain lion server. Next time take a breath and read with understanding before clicking continue.

OSX Server whatever version has additional GUI apps that makes managing the server easier. However since you have Unix sitting under the hood you have all server utilities you need with regular OSX given a compiler and an internet connection. If you are comfortable with the command line you can build additional tools you need from source. I just had to upgrade from Apples default Apache 2.2.24 to 2.4.7 and built it from source rather than using ports.

You pay for convenience and support.

If I was in your position I would have thought "Oh, I assumed the server upgrade would be free. Oh well.. Is it worth $20 to me to upgrade the server? Hmmm...". There's no need to get upset about it.

I just wanted to add even though I can find open source equivalents for all server features found here:

http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/

with the possible exception of Time Machine...

$20 is totally worth it if you really need these features. Hell, like someone else said $120/year would be worth it! You know how much this stuff would cost 10+ years ago? Orders of magnitude more!

Wow, just a third of a year late to give me your sage advice, but whatever. Next time take a breath and read the date on the post before posting a smart arse comment.

Some of you might want to check the ratings on Server lately. There's a reason it's at 2 stars. It's crap at this point. I decided to not use it. They dumped support for things like configuring NFS some time ago. Hell, as of writing this I can't even bring the page up for Server. It just keeps the buys symbol going and going. 7 out of their 19 apps have ratings less than 3 stars. Apple seems to be going downhill. Look at iOS7. Ugly buggy disaster. I guess Apple without Steve Jobs is just a matter of time if they don't shape up and listen to their customers. But hey, I'm having a hissy-fit. WTF do I know....

Haters gonna hate I suppose. I run server 3.0 on Mavs at home and one of our clients runs it in a 'golden triangle' AD 40 mac setup with no issues.

Haters gonna hate I suppose.

The ironic thing about judging someone and labeling them is that it in fact has the exact opposite effect of the one you seem to believe in. In other words, my only momentary anger was at a company (Apple) back in October. But by coming on here and calling me a name, you are in fact creating a situation that might provoke anger in someone where there was none before. The point of this act is uncertain to me, but I always find hypocrisy in humans utterly fascinating for they seem to not have a clue what their own actions do. The point in fact being, I have no idea WTF a "hater" is. Someone who hates? Is that like >50% kind of thing or 80%+ or what? Or is it just some Generation Z (as in Zombie Obsessed) kind of pop culture low brow slang that means someone who disagrees with what YOU personally like? Obviously, it is the latter given the context of this thread. Thus, I would suppose an appropriate response from a previous generation might be "Pot call kettle black" or to propose one your generation might understand in the context of these forums, "Fanboys gonna be fanboys". ;)
