Only real stupid people would fall for that.

Unfortunately...

This is America so I wouldn't be surprised.

Why do you make such generalizations? Not everyone is computer Savy, there are some people in their 60s and 70s who 'barely' get by browsing the internet and checking email, and yea they bought Mac because it's easy. They are not real stupid, they are not dumb, they just don't know enough to know it's fake.

So what is actually hacked? How do you end up with that page? Just luck of the draw? Is Bing/Google hacked then or what? I have no understanding of JavaScript.

Do you happen to know if there is a similar extension for Safari?

The last time I checked there was no Javascript blocking extension for Safari. Something about the way Apple does things with the browser and policy.

Although I think (I'm at work on a Windows PC, so I can't verify) you can turn Javascript off in Safari preferences. If you do that and encounter a page that uses it and you want to see it you'll have to go to Preferences each time, rather than a right-click with the extension on the other browsers.

Edit: Looks there is an extension for Safari: http://javascript-blocker.toggleable.com/

this is why that feature was the 1st thing i turned off when i upgraded my macbook pro/bought my new iMac...

Really?!? This is why?
I mean... How did you even know they were going to lauch an attack like this?

Seems like you must have known this was going to happen... which means you had something to do with it!!!

;)

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question and offer the advice.:D

I ran into that after following a couple of links from Reddit. Safari would not let me close the window due to a Javascript loop. I ended up having to Force Quit Safari. It did not come back when I tried the link again.

Honestly, if people really fall for these tricks they should not be anywhere near a computer and they deserve to be ripped off - hopefully they might learn from it. For god's sake the URL alone is enough to make you realise its dodgy. People should NOT be told to keep pressing OK buttons on dialogue boxes as this can introduced more problems. Notice the user in the video did not got to preferences and change the home page, or Hold shift and Start safari either.

Someday you'll get ripped off doing something (some life situation outside the internet that you're not aware of) - should we laugh at you when that happens?

Just because someone falls for something doesn't mean they're an idiot and deserve it.

The target for these scams are elderly people. I work at Walmart (I'm a student don't kill me) and I honestly only see old people attempting to buy these money paks EVER. Whenever they come to the service desk or I am supervising the front end and I see one attempting to buy one I immediately tell them it is a high scam item and they usually explain to me something along the lines of this scam happened to them.

Not everyone grew up with computers like you. First time internet users, grandma and grandpa who barely know the internet etc.

As a frequent Bing Image Searcher of T Swift photos, I'm thankful for this information. I will be cautious.

This guy must be seriously unhappy with his choice of computer to come on here and try to knock Apple down so frequently. His profile is humorous to look at.

I don't see what's to be happy about. His graphics card is one of the worst i've ever seen.

I've never heard of similar marware on Windows. It's just funny how MacRumors says that because it's sounds so much like an emotionally dependent fanboy attempt of trying to deflect.

to be fair that sight would nail windows computers just as easily. This is a browser based attack......

Exactly. Some of those phishing attempts and ransomware pages can be very convincing. Especially if you don't take the time to read it carefully and spot the obvious giveaways, even if you do know enough to know it's fake.

That's because you're not viewing the right kind of porn.:D I've yet to encounter one from the FBI extorting money, but I have run in ALOT of so-called anti-malware software that holds my browser hostage.

"Virus detected on your machine. Download Virus Defender immediately to remedy the problem." As if. I run a spartan (bare bone) machine with no anti-malware, I kill the process and resume browsing my porn. I don't negotiate with hostage takers.

I find using Ad Blocker and turning off javascript helps a lot to limit these sort of attacks. But that's on the Winders 7 and Firefox side. Dunno if it's effective on Safari.

Nah he's right. This type of **** could never happen to windows you know why? Instead of a browser-based attack it would more likely be a trojan that locks your entire system.

Even simpler way: close Safari, disconnect Wi-Fi, open Safari and close unwanted tab/window.

This is exactly why I don't like (and will turn off) the "re-open all previously open windows" feature. Even accidental Javascript errors can result in endless windows, and errors like that are much easier to clear by quitting and restarting.

How does one turn off this feature?? I can't seem to find the option.
