I also can't believe why Apple didn't see the need for a standalone app on iOS. I already uploaded a ton of stuff on iCloud Drive through my Mac, but accessing the files on iOS is a pain in the ass. We even have an iCloud Drive Web app on iCloud.com. So why no iCloud App on iOS?
Apple could simply deliver it through the App Store as a free app, giving the user the choice of downloading it.

Pushy Pushy Apple

More like pushing customers to upgrade to iCloud Drive. Using the latest versions of iWork apps on Yosemite, you get this message: "Documents are not kept up to date across devices. <Turn On iCloud Drive>"

Upgrade to iCloud Drive or you can't even use the old iCloud to sync your documents.

I was very disappointed to find out there is no way to share a link to a file in your iCloud Drive.

Hoping to see this feature added in the future, but not holding my breath.

it's a v1. why wouldnt you expect it to get better over time?

I've been an Apple user since the 1980s, and this isn't to be snide, but I would never trust iCloud drive to store anything important. Apple shutters their services frequently. I can still access my freeservers.com and tripod data from the 1990s. But Apple has gone through iTools, .Mac, MobileMe, and now two iterations of storage for iCloud. I just don't trust it, and iDisk never worked reliably or quickly compared to Dropbox or Google Drive. iDisk would often crash the Finder. They do some things very well, but Internet services is not one of them (excluding the iTunes Store, which has been reliable for me).

speaking of not trusting -- do you trust Dropbox, despite their having accidentally unlocked everybody's accounts that one time? stuff happens. cloud isnt for top secret things you can risk losing.

It does if you right click and say open in new tab. I still don't know what its doing though. Does it populate itself or must I migrate everything I own from iCloud into it. Damn idiot proof isn't it :D

I can access it, that is to say the icon is there, but when I click it, there's nothing there.

Not sure what's going on with that.

Go into System Prefs --> iCloud and make sure "iCloud Drive" is turned on.

It was already turned on and there was no way I could get any access to it in Finder but restarting the Mac seems to have fixed it. :)

I've just installed Yosemite and I can't access iCloud Drive from Finder. I've tried clicking the icon but it doesn't respond.

Restart your computer. Fixed it for me.
Edit: Which it seems you already figured out. ;)

I had to turn it off and then turn it back on to make it do anything, once I did it started auto-populating.

"Brings Fully Functional iCloud Drive to Mac and iOS"

Ya I totally disagree. Without an app for iOS this statement is false.

explain tho -- what would an apple iOS app do? iOS is app-driven....and today, any app you want to use that works w/ files, is free to browse iCloud Drive as a source for files. for ex Dropbox can browse iCloud and let you pick any file you want to import.

no reason Mail or Facebook or anything else can't do it. devs just need time to implement that.

There are so many major new features in Yosemite that I've forgotten some of them. You kind of get caught in the new UI and visible features like handoff that you forget some of the less advertised features. It's been great to re-discover some of them.

Who's replacing their DropBox with iCloud Drive?

Does anyone know if the files are stored locally on your mac / device as well as on iCloud?

why? you still have access to all of your iCloud Drive files from iOS, you just access them from inside an app. apps like DropBox or Transmit, which work w/ any file type, can browse all of your iCloud Drive files absolutely perfectly.

I haven't looked yet but how would you get Dropbox to look at iCloud??

Not me. Needs better integration with iOS like Dropbox.

Point out if I am wrong

Lets say I have an app, for example, ABC on my iphone. I also have ABC app on my Macbook.
Before, the company which made ABC app used to save all user data on its own servers and sync the data with ABC app on Macbook.
Now, the app data is stored on Apple's servers for which I am sure Apple takes money from that company and also is taking money (if beyond 5GB) from users.
This is sheer street smartness from Apple.

What and where is any advantage to the user?

Should you enable iCloud Drive if you don’t own an iOS-8-supported iPhone? I still have an iPhone 4 with iCloud, but will it continue to work if I ‘upgrade’ to iCloud Drive on Yosemite?

Different folders are showing on my mac, my iPhone and iCloud.com... very strange

e.g GoodReader is only showing on iPhone, Script Editor and Scanner by Readdle is only showing on iCloud.com and Preview is only showing on my Mac.

Others such as the iWork folders and one folder i created myself are showing on all 3.

Oops on iCloud.

Same here
Same here but I think it is my mistake. I tried to use the old iCloud as iDrive by making shortcuts etc and forgot to delete those shortcuts before upgrading.

I was then seeing two iCloud icons in the finder, I removed the one which I had created. But was not doing anything, I played around and ended up making a big mess!

Spent an hour with Adobe to ask them what is needed to reinstall CS6 and LR4 and how to backup LR4 library. I have the MS office 11 keys but don't have the media or the link from where I downloaded. Hopefully MS will help me too.

Using the Time Machine for the first time as I want to have a second way to restore if needed, will do a couple of carbon copy clone copies and then plan to reinstall.

All I need to figure out on how to reinstall from the backup partition or from the network, if that does not work out then have an appointment with genius tomorrow :).

Will have to check the forum again on the tips to use iCloud as a backup solution in the cloud. All I want is a safe copy of family photos and videos.

A few lessons learned......

"app-driven"... Well, OK... What if I, by any chance, just would like to go through some files of various formats (images, pdf documents, text documents, spreadsheets, even audio files, etc.), that I am working on, e.g. connected to a project. Should I jump back and forth between multiple apps just to do that very simple thing? My friend, sometimes we all need to take off those rose-tinted glasses...

"Access is a bit more limited on iOS where there is no iCloud Drive app allowing access to all files, but the service still allows users of iCloud Drive-enabled apps to view and save files related to that app that are stored and synced with iCloud Drive."

Unfortunate. I was very excited to finally see a good effort in the cloud. Now I am deflated again.

You can actually download an app made by a 3rd party that just loads the iCloud Drive folder.
