Alright, I've really seen a lot of good movies this year, but Babel was definitely the best. DEFINITELY NOT FOR EVERYONE (I'm not going to try and argue people out of saying "It sucked"), but I thought it was incredible, and really, really heart-wrenching in a way that Brockback Mountain (<yawn>), for example, just couldn't match up with. It was pertinent, it was well acted, and I never found myself bored.
But yeah, on a side note:
Children of Men: Great - the 10 minute one-shot action scene toward the end might be the most intense 10 minutes of film I've ever seen.
Pan's Labyrinth: I'm not saying it's my favorite movie, because it's not. But I remember thinking, as it ended, "Wow - that was perfect." I mean, there's absolutely nothing in it that could have been done better. It was perfect..
Little Miss Sunshine: Eh... I mean, I liked it, to be sure. But Best Picture? No.
The Departed: Martin Scorcese realizing, "Oh wait, THESE are the kinds of movies I do best." Great - but I don't think better than Goodfellas, really. And by the way, for those saying "Jack Nickelson [spelling, I know] was incredible", Jack Nickelson acted like himself (but with a Boston accent). It fit the role well... but like, incredible? No.
United 93: Wayyyyyy too soon. Unbelievably good, but my God, show a little mercy on the American public. Not really violent, but absolutely nauseating to watch, just because you had this horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach the whole time. "Wow... everyone on this plane is going to die - like, they all really died. Wow."
Borat: OVVVVERRRRRAAAAATEEEEEDDDDD. If I wanted to see comedy based on people embarassing themselves, I can just turn on Fox on Tuesdays and watch American Idol.
Those are just my two cents for now, though.
