Alright, I've really seen a lot of good movies this year, but Babel was definitely the best. DEFINITELY NOT FOR EVERYONE (I'm not going to try and argue people out of saying "It sucked"), but I thought it was incredible, and really, really heart-wrenching in a way that Brockback Mountain (<yawn>), for example, just couldn't match up with. It was pertinent, it was well acted, and I never found myself bored.

But yeah, on a side note:

Children of Men: Great - the 10 minute one-shot action scene toward the end might be the most intense 10 minutes of film I've ever seen.

Pan's Labyrinth: I'm not saying it's my favorite movie, because it's not. But I remember thinking, as it ended, "Wow - that was perfect." I mean, there's absolutely nothing in it that could have been done better. It was perfect..

Little Miss Sunshine: Eh... I mean, I liked it, to be sure. But Best Picture? No.

The Departed: Martin Scorcese realizing, "Oh wait, THESE are the kinds of movies I do best." Great - but I don't think better than Goodfellas, really. And by the way, for those saying "Jack Nickelson [spelling, I know] was incredible", Jack Nickelson acted like himself (but with a Boston accent). It fit the role well... but like, incredible? No.

United 93: Wayyyyyy too soon. Unbelievably good, but my God, show a little mercy on the American public. Not really violent, but absolutely nauseating to watch, just because you had this horrible feeling in the pit of your stomach the whole time. "Wow... everyone on this plane is going to die - like, they all really died. Wow."

Borat: OVVVVERRRRRAAAAATEEEEEDDDDD. If I wanted to see comedy based on people embarassing themselves, I can just turn on Fox on Tuesdays and watch American Idol.

Those are just my two cents for now, though.

Somebody help me with this: Isn't Eddie Murphy getting an Oscar nomination one of the signs of the Apocalypse?

Mrs. Q and I are just starting our annual mad watch-the-nominees movie-going spree. We've only seen a couple of the major nominees so far, but ask me again in a month!

When is Dr Q going to start the annual guess the winner thread?

Forest Whittaker was mesmerising in The Last King Of Scotland. He is like Al Pacino in The Godfather - he so effortlessly segues from loveable to horrifying in the course of the movie (in a very different way, of course - varying between even wider extremes).

I just got back from seeing Pan's Labyrinth. It was great, and it deserves the nominations it got.

It's in Spanish with subtitles. Not a kid's movie.

Once again the Academy ignore Comedy with The Devil Wears Prada and Supporting (Stole the Movie) Emily Blunt, who IMO was more impressive than Meryl Streep.

Also, disappointed that Children of Men wasn't nominated.

I haven't seen Babel and Letters From Iwo Jima. My votes goes to...

The Departed for Best Picture

The Queen is hardly worth it and shouldn't be on the list.
We saw The Queen for the first time on the plane, yesterday, and thought Helen Mirren was brilliant. I wondered how the Brits felt about her performance?

The Departed for Best Picture

Sorry to trot out the dead horse, but why on earth?

What makes people like this movie? The faux-existentialism? The shooting in the headness of it all? The fact that it couldn't be more white male if it tried? The substandard performances from the big names?

I 'spose predictability is familiar, but what on earth is sympathetic here?

hm i don't think that the departed is winning best movie (my guess is letters) but i think in best director it might be quite close

what i find more surprising is that leonardo dicaprio did get nominated for blood diamonds and not the departed ... but perhaps watching the departed in german and blood diamond in english kinda makes it difficult

If another song like "It's Hard out There for a Pimp" wins an award, I'm going to scream!

I made that post exactly a month ago. Now I'm ashamed to announce that Mrs. Q and I have followed our annual tradition of becoming relentless movie watchers for a month, going to theaters and renting DVDs to see as many Oscar nominees as we can, in between work and other hobbies, and while trying not to go broke with movie ticket prices.

Here's our final tally: Out of 58 nominated films, we managed to see 29, exactly half. Since some of the films got multiple nominations, we saw the film for 67 of the 113 nominations, which is 60%. We only missed seeing one major film, Blood Diamond, which mostly disappeared from local theaters without coming out on DVD yet. If we'd gotten to that one, with its 5 nominations, we would have topped 70 in our nomination count. We'll just have to see that one after the fact.

Of course, I think Casino Royale should have been nominated, and deserved to win, in all 24 categories! :)

What? No Snakes on a Plane?!

;-)

I haven't seen lots of those. Looks like I've got some movie renting* to do...
