Yes, it's doinking. Every few minutes at an unknown pattern. Kind of sounds like the sound gchat makes while in the gmail browser. There is also (perhaps unrelated) window that pops up, like a warning box shape, but it's so quick I can't tell if it has text on it and what that would say. There doesn't appear to be any one program running that would cause this in each case. Thoughts?

the "doink" you speak of must be the system alert noise, and it is happening because some app or service is alerting you. Try quitting everything and seeing if it still "doinks" if it does, it could be a system problem.
