I have a clean os x leopard disc and when i try to install the os to completely wipe my unibody mbp to start a fresh copy, it just keeps getting to the grey screen and rebooting. any ideas?

Why are you not using Install Disk 1 that came with your computer? Leopard retail is NOT high enough yet to run on the unibodies. They need 10.5.5 or higher.
that must be it thanks. i didn't think it would matter because i left my other disc at school and had this disc to upgrade a macbook pro (last gen that came with tiger) that i threw away.
