I am running a late 2012 basic Mac mini with 16 GB RAM upgrade and changed a year ago to external boot from a Crucial SSD via USB (OS X 10.11.6). The first weeks everything was fine, then every few weeks the machine suddenly froze: I could not change users or apps, then it stopped reacting completely, showing only the color wheel. After manual restart it started up without problem or error message. My conclusion was that there where tiny interruptions between the external SSD and the internal processor stopping the OS in its tracks.

Now the error occurs more and more often, sometimes every few days. Perhaps the reason is a mechanical defect on the USB outputs leading to short interruptions of current when moved? What do you think? Any other ideas?

When it works, it works great, but more and more the freezes annoy. I thought about opening the machine up and looking for defects or even installing the SSD in it, but I am not very handy with those things and fear to destroy something. Of course I could try another SSD and/or enclosure or another mac to combine, but I would have to buy them.

Things to try:
- change ports
- change connecting cable
- change enclosure that the SSD is in if possible (or change USB3/SATA dock or adapter).

Is the RAM factory-original, or did you put it in?
If you added RAM, go back to the factory-original configuration if possible.

Does it have an internal drive?
If so, try booting from the internal drive and run that way 2 days.
Do the problems disappear?

One last thought:
Where -is- the SSD?
Is it located very close to (or on top of) the Mini?
If so, try moving it a bit further away from the Mini.
Could it be electrical interference from the USB3 cabling?

- Thank you for your reply. I already tried the 3 changes, therefore I suspect a hardware defect inside the Mac Mini.

- The RAM I put in when I bought it in 2012; the defect only started a few weeks after changing HDD to external SSD. Unfortunately I do not have the original RAM any more, because my son used them for his laptop.

- I have still the Mavericks configuration on the internal HDD in the state when I added the SSD and will try this when it is compatible with my work.

- The SSD lies in its enclosure on top of the Mac. So I will try this first to move it away.

Thanks again!

You'd probably have less luck getting responses in the El Capitan forum than this one.

So you had Mavericks when you had the HDD but switched to El Capitan when using the SSD? And you didn't have any problems before El Capitan/SSD? If that is the case, I think it's more likely that there's a software issue than a hardware issue internal to the Mini which just coincidentally started when you made the switch. If you had Mavericks initially on the SSD and had problems but then subsequently moved to El Capitan and still had issues, then it would make it less likely to be a software issue.

If the problems started with El Capitan, it's likely to be an 3rd-party software issue specific to your computer rather than something that is an El Capitan issue. I base this on my experience with my 2012 Mini (still has El Capitan) and the lack of similar issues reported both on this forum and the El Capitan forum (although I stopped visiting the El Capitan forum on a regular basis about 9 months ago).

If the problems started with El Capitan, you can try running in safe mode. This will disable 3rd-party extensions, add-in's, daemons, etc.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

If it's at all practical, if you can clone off what is on your SSD to an external HDD and then clone your Mavericks internal HDD to the SSD and try that, that should produce good information, particularly if you try running Mavericks off of the internal HDD as you mentioned you would do. If you have the same problems running Mavericks on the SSD but not on the internal HDD, then it's obviously more likely to be a hardware issue, although I would specifically like to know what brand/model enclosures you've used before considering an internal hardware issue to be the problem.

Thank you for your input. The problems started about 8 weeks after switching from Mavericks/HDD to Capitan/SDD, so I thought El Capitan would work fine. I will try safe mode as you suggested.

The exact brands I use are:

SSD: https://smile.amazon.de/gp/product/B01IAGSDUE/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and the following 2 enclosures (problem happened with both):

I have an Inateck enclosure that looks the same as the one in the link but has a different model number. I also have a couple of newer Inatecks that don't have switches. All have worked without problems, but I don't run them as system drives (one does have a SSD inside). As for the Scalar enclosure, people that have problems have immediate and consistent failures, not periodic failures. If your problem occurs in the same way with either enclosures, the enclosure is probably not the issue.

Looking at the issues people report with the Crucial MX300 and on the web, if the problem is with the MX300, it doesn't appear to be common.

you mean as alternative to the enclosure? I already tried 2 different enclosures, same issue.

I tried safe mode, but it does not work with 2 different user accounts and fast switching (which we need because this is the main work PC for my wife and me).

I forgot to mention that after the first occurrences of the problem I did last January a fresh install of El Capitan on the SSD (not from backup; installing the few necessary additional programs from new and copying the document folders) which did not change anything. So I doubt software incompatibilities.

Moving the SSD away from the mac did not help, the problem occurred again.

Thank you, but that is what I already did last January: clean install, only few additional apps (OpenOffice, Burn, XLD). Cisco and Teamviewer came much later, after the problem had manifested itself already.

In the EntreCheck, towards the end, there is "SystemUIServer.app Crash" and "Kernel Panic". If you can post the results of the kernel panic, that would be helpful. If whatever comes up from the SystemUIServer crash isn't that large, you can post that as well. In the "Console" app, on the left side, if you click on either in the "System Reports" or the "User Reports" - if you have multiple of the reports that starts with "Kernel" and end with "panic", that could point to what your problem has been. (If you don't find these reports, there's another way to get to them - you should have at least one kernel panic report according to EntreCheck.)

There is one Kernel Panic, but from 3 weeks ago, so I do not think it is related to the problem I have, that has occurred a dozen times since then. Anyway, here is the Console report

What looks suspicious in the kernel panic report is the Cisco kernel extension. If you run in safe mode, it will not load this and you can see if your problems recur. You mention that the problems occurred after the Cisco software install but hopefully running in safe mode is not the inconvenience that de-installing the software is and in the scheme of things is probably the easiest thing to try.

As you mention, there's only one kernel panic, but multiple freezes. It may be that the computer has problems where it cannot produce a kernel panic report or it isn't a kernel panic. If you can post the SystemUIServer.app Crash text and WindowServer Crash text, that may be helpful - or not - some of these reports are only useful to the developers and system engineers at Apple. Kernel panic reports are typically the most useful crash diagnostic reports.

In the Console app, if you can look and see if there are other types of crash reports that have dates/times that coincide with your problems, that could be helpful. It should be noted that a crash that results in a crash report may not necessarily crash or disable the computer but obviously if you have many of the same type of crashes, that is pointing to a problem.

One thing that I will point out is that it may seem from the kernel panic report that there is a GPU hardware problem. But kernel panic reports similar to these happened to me on my 2012 Mini when I was running later versions of Yosemite and those were not GPU hardware issues as the kernel panics stopped once I installed El Capitan. So at this point, I would not say you have a GPU problem based solely on this kernel panic report.

I finally decided to try and replace the internal HDD with the SDD. Now it is 6 days running continuously without any problem, shutdown or kernel panic. I think my original idea, that there is a mechanical problem with the USB out leading to short interruptions of the electrical connection, might be correct; it would at least explain everything.

I'm glad to see that you got your problem solved. There would need to be more work done to determine whether it was a software issue or a logic board issue. If you have problems with USB devices connected to the Mini in the future, that would point to a logic board issue. If you don't, I would tend to believe it's some type of software-based issue.

The original post made me think of two additional things:

1. 10.11 (El Capitan) may not have enabled TRIM on the external SSD. Without TRIM enabled you may get a loss of performance over time. I believe High Sierra enables this automatically now.

2. USB does hog CPU compared to connecting via internal SATA3 or (in my case) Thunderbolt to eSATA.
