OSX remembers the name of various devices that are plugged into your Mac. Does anyone know where these names are stored and how the OS identifies the device being plugged in?

For example, if I have a USB device that I have renamed to 'FOOBAR' how does OSX know the next time I plug it in that it should name it FOOBAR? Is anything stored on the device itself that would identify it to the OS?

The volume label is stored on the disk, so for example if you take the USB drive and plug it into another mac it will be named the same thing. If you have several partitions on a disk then each one has it's own volume label.
