What ever happened to calling people or sending a text message? I am old enough to recall writing letters, although I have no faith in the postal service here in the US these days. But, calling or a text message is not good enough?

I personally hate making calls. the only time I use my iPhone to call people is customer services or my mum every other week. SMS could be an option but MMS are no longer working here and what if I want to share images?

Anyway ... it is working for me. Maybe because I use a custom DNS?

You do bring up a good point here. It could be a DNS problem causing this issue.

I could be mistaken, but I think MMS is what is used when sending a photo or video clip to or from a phone other than an iPhone. iPhones default to iMessage which should be able to handle MMS like traffic. Perhaps you are conversing with other parties that do not use iPhones or have disabled iMessage. That would explain the need for MMS.

“Based on user reports posted to social media.”

Is that not like phoning up your telecom provider to report a problem with the line?

It also prompts the visualisation of the stereotype of people rushing (without thinking) to post on Facebook; “there’s a problem with Facebook!!!!! I can’t post!!!! Help me!!!! My life is over!!!!1!1”

Tried sending an Instagram DM about a hour ago here in U.S. and it claimed it went through but then disappeared. And the message is just gone for some reason. So I would assume part of the issue since had no issues til this morning.
Na, that’s just Facebook censoring you.

I haven't been able to use FB Messenger for at least a week now (iPhone X, iOS 14.2); when signing in, it says "Unable to complete request. Please try again later." I've tried uninstalling, restarting, etc, to no avail.

Facebook is hardly the only option you have to communicate with friends and family. Facebook is not just "communication" but a whole host of toxic human behavior as well.

It is the main platform that a lot of people use, that includes most of my friends and family. For me Facebook is communication.
