Outdoor movies

We did an outdoor movie for a party for my kids last year and my wife would like to make it an every year event. Last year I just connected the projector to our laptop (screen mirror) and had a separate speaker connected to the laptop. Is this the easiest method? Would it be easier to connect to the Apple TV? iPad..? Anybody have a setup for this that has worked well?
 
I think the easiest is to use what you have. I usually use my iPhone with the Apple hdmi out breakout cable and Bluetooth speaker for sound.
 
If the projector has a USB jack, you might be able to put a movie on a USB stick and bypass the need for the laptop. Test this though to be sure the projector software will access and play a movie in the format you may have.
