Outlook 2011 for Mac with Mountain Lion 10.8.2

I seem to be having issues where some inbound emails generate a pop-up notification whilst others don't. I've tried resetting notifications, the usual MS trick of opening and closing Outlook and restarting my Mac but nothing seems to have any effect. Any suggestions?
