I may be showing my age but I don’t get the reasons behind the trend to make programs, apps or OS’s ‘Dark Mode’. To me these seem purely a pallet change, and one that some people may like and some not. On the apps I’ve seen a few features have also changed but those new features and all of the old ones don’t DEPEND on the color pallet being set to any tone, that to me is just a personal preference. And 2-5 years from now the ‘excitement’ will be with the ‘brighter’ or ‘colorful’ or whatever marketing term a change in screen displays is deemed fashionable then.

Or am I completely missing something here?

We're using devices with bright screens more than ever, and especially now that Apple believes every app should have an abundance of empty white space, it's nice when you have the option to darken everything so the display is not so harsh to the eyes, especially when observing in a darker environment.

Neat, instead of an empty white void its an empty black void. Isn't design language beautiful these days? You could use an Apple ][ and never see the difference between modern styling.

Sometimes style is just a temporary fashion trend. (See flat design.)

I just switched to Outlook.com and I love it. I was on Gmail.

I set it up as Exchange on my Mac but also my iPhone and iPad. There is an option for outlook.com on iOS, but with the changeover they did to Exchange for Outlook.com a while back, I find I can use it as Exchange and get push mail with the stock apps and I find it to be quicker than the outlook.com option on iOS. There is no outlook.com option on macOS. Unfortunately my iCloud Mail is ridden with spam so I have nothing linked to it, so the only emails I get are spam or Apple stuff. I'd probably use iCloud Mail if I could delete that address completely and pick a new one without creating a different Apple ID account. For now, outlook.com works perfectly and I love the stock mail apps on iOS and macOS and watchOS.

You are. People like me who work in front of a computer for more than 10+ hours a day appreciate dark mode. I'm a designer, so I have to stare at a screen all day. Staring into a bright white screen causes headaches and fatigue. However, when staring into a dark screen there is a lot less eye strain which means less headaches and fatigue. I applaud Mac for finally heading towards the dark side.

If dark mode was so good, why are books still printed in black ink on white paper?

Count me as another one who doesn't get the attraction. Maybe it is an age thing.
Pages aren't backlit? The white light is causing eyestrain. You don't get them from pages.
