Is it any good as email ?

Compared to say gmail or whatever ?

I use it, I am also a basic user but for just emailing there's nothing I think "Oh I wish Outlook could do" that it doesn't do... nice clean interface.

I have notice lately that I’m getting spam of & on in Outlook.

Outlook really shines when used with an Exchange server. Outside of that, it's good, but not spectacular.

I'll take Outlook or OS X Mail over ANY webmail, anyday, anytime.
