Do any of the AppleTVs allow sound output to two devices (e.g. AirPods?)

Basically my wife and I want to be able to watch a movie and hear the audio from our AirPods. Is this possible or do I need to purchase something else to achieve this?

Thanks

You can select AirPods to listen to movies from the ATV 4K. I only have 4Ks running the latest TVOS so I can’t comment on the older versions. Not sure if you can select two AirPod targets but I have two pairs and I’ll test it and report back.

Just tested this. It doesn’t work. I had both AirPods paired to my phone and they both showed up in the Airplay list but when I selected both, it said only one Bluetooth device at a time while they were in our ears. I was able to connect my AirPods and HomePod together as the Airplay audio sources for the ATV tho and that worked. I then tried unpairing one set of AirPods from my phone and pairing to my wife’s phone. It didn’t show up in the Airplay list in that case. Even tried switching users on the ATV. Doesn’t seem possible unless someone else can chime in with different results. Airplay is kind of buggy in my experience.

I think AirPods do not use AirPlay. Normal Bluetooth audio protocol (AirPods work the same with any non-Apple BT device, eg my Lenovo notebook).
AirPlay 2 (connects over LAN, not BT) allows multiple targets simultaneously. So, theoretically you could connect 2 AirPort Expresses and a wired earphone to each of them. Sounds cumbersome, I know.

Right but regardless, I was just stating that Airplay has been buggy. Two HomePods playing when I ask one and not in stereo mode. Devices disappearing from the list. Showing devices in the list that I don’t have a clue what they are lol, etc... It is deceiving though because the AirPods show up in all the lists along with AirPlay devices but only when they’re connected which makes sense.

Thanks for testing! I was hoping both would be able to connect but I guess I need to look for a bluetooth transmitter that allows two headsets to be connected at the same time.
